RecruitPKB: How to say I am not interested

I've had this question asked several times by players over the years and again recently it was brought up as many  2023 recruits have been making their decisions, "how do I tell a coach that I am not interested?".  This may be a question you face at different stages of communication with a coach so I wanted to address a couple of scenarios and give you some insight into how I have my players address this topic. If you receive an initial email from a coach at a school that you know you would not attend no matter what, it is still common courtesy to send a reply back. Even if your resume is much stronger than the girls who play for that program, NEVER think you are better than the players, the school, or the coach. We have all been at different stages in our games, we [...]

RecruitPKB: Prepare for Coach Calls

As the coach communication process officially kicks off on June 15th for 2024 recruits and continues to heat up for 2022 recruits who still trying to find a college golf home, phone calls are very important. Since an initial call could be your one shot at earning a spot on the coach's potential recruit list you need to make sure you are prepared. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for that initial call: Have questions written down that you would like to ask the coach. Make sure these questions are relevant to the current timing of the process. Have some insight and facts about the school, golf program, coach, and team available for reference and talking points. Have some answers for potential questions that a coach may ask you. Be sure you have thought through your answers and they are honest and personal to [...]

RecruitPKB: What is Confidence

"Confidence is the knowledge that I can give my best effort regardless of circumstances" - Ben Bergeron After hearing this definition of confidence on a podcast I listen to it got me thinking about the real meaning of confidence. But what catches my attention in this quote is the use of the word "knowledge". Typically the words faith and belief are used when defining confidence but I believe the use of the word knowledge is what defines true confidence. According to the Merriam-Webster definition of knowledge, it is "the fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience". As opposed to the definition of belief, "something that is accepted or considered to be true or honest" and the definition of faith, "something that is believed especially with strong conviction".  Having faith and belief in yourself are almost these vague words to give you the [...]

RecruitPKB: What You Think You Deserve

"Golf is the one sport that doesn't give you what you 'think you deserve'." - Danielle Kang In consulting young female golfers who are extremely hard-working, intelligent, and disciplined I see their struggles with expectations and perfectionism on the golf course. So many of these young ladies have the mentality that when you study hard you expect to get good grades, therefore if you work hard at golf you expect to have good scores. And while yes, hard work and good golf scores do go hand in hand, that mentality of expectation with academics doesn’t exactly work the same with your golf game. And when that mentality takes over a young golfer's mind it is extremely difficult for them to adjust, relax, and allow things to happen once they struggle in a golf tourney. Hard work needs to build trust, not expectation. I am no golf psychologist [...]

RecruitPKB: Demanding College Majors and Golf

I recently dove into more research and insight on players wanting to pursue certain majors in college that have a tendency to conflict with golf schedules and coach preferences. I've got quite a bit to share so I'll start this week with some of the coaches feedback. Keep in mind, that these particular responses are from some of the most elite DI programs (all are top 100 ranked DI prograams) where the golf demand is very tough, along with some demanding academic schools included in these responses. I started with this group of coaches/programs just to shed some light on those elite programs that many girls dream of attending. As much as many girls want to overachieve and “do it all”, sometimes it’s just not that simple. I’ll be sharing more coach and player responses plus data on programs across all divisions as this was just a [...]

RecruitPKB: I Feel Your Pain

For those that may not know, I moved on from playing professional golf back in 2010 after giving it a go for 8 years. It's hard for many people to believe how little golf I play these days after over 20 years of playing competitively. I shared this story several years but it popped back up on my feed recently so I thought I would share it again with a few updates. I was asked to play in a 27 hole 2 person team tournament for a big charity here in the upstate of SC. I was paired up with Ali Rogers, 2012 Miss SC, and 2013 Miss America Runner Up. She had played a little high school golf but was a big softball player. The format was 9 hole best ball and 9 hole captains' choice before going in for lunch to be re-flighted and re-paired [...]

It's a very exciting time but also a time to take a few minutes to ask yourself some questions about what you want out of your college experience. It easy to get wrapped up in the lure of a school, the golf program, the facilities, and the athletic department. Coaches will do their best to impress you when you are on a visit. It's part of their job to convince you that the school and golf program is outstanding. It's your job to decide if it will actually be the best fit for you or not. Below are a few of the questions that every player needs to ask before making their final decision to play college golf. Is your personality compatible [...]

RecruitPKB: Scholarship Offers

If you want to have dream schools on your list that is completely ok, I love to see a female golfer willing to work hard to play at the highest level possible. But especially if scholarship money is a top priority, then you need to focus most of your time and energy on the realistic schools where you are #1 or #2 on their list. If you only focus on your dream schools where you are on the coach's “interested” list then you will find yourself missing opportunities at great schools and programs where you may receive offers earlier. Scholarship money is not as abundant as many are led to believe so be sure you give yourself the opportunity to earn scholarship money by being realistic with the schools you focus on.   Written by: Brandi Jackson, RecruitPKB College Consultant For more information about college recruiting, please contact Brandi at bjackson@pkbgt.org
