RecruitPKB: Love Yourself

By |2017-09-13T11:44:43-04:00February 16th, 2017|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

As I am sure everyone was aware, this past week was all about LOVE! And while Valentine's Day is more about showing your love to others, I wanted to take the chance to remind you about the importance of loving yourself but also possessing the willingness to become a better version of who you are.  There is no doubt that you have to love who you are, some days may be harder than others to do this, but you must find the power to still love who you are at the end of the day. With that being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to be a better version of who YOU are and what you want with your life. It should actually be a priority!!   Maturity and discipline are two things I have always struggled with in my life, not that there is anything [...]

RecruitPKB: Dress the Part

By |2017-09-13T11:44:43-04:00February 8th, 2017|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

Through my 28+ years of playing golf, I have certainly seen golf fashion change drastically over time, especially for females. As junior golfers, we did not have many options for cute clothing on the golf course. I can remember wearing long Duck Head shorts and baggy collared shirts for most of my childhood. I will admit that I was quite the tomboy growing up but the options were still very limited to look cute and trendy on the golf course. Even in college, golf skirts/skorts were just becoming a fashion trend. Obviously, times have changed and so has fashion on the golf course. From a college recruiting perspective, how you dress on the golf course can play a factor in whether a coach recruits you or not. It would be one of the small factors, but it is still something to be aware of as you proceed [...]

RecruitPKB: Are Scholarships Negotiable?

By |2017-09-13T11:48:17-04:00February 1st, 2017|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

I was asked this question last week about whether or not scholarships are negotiable so I thought it was a good topic to address to those who may be curious about this question. I have faced it numerous times working with families as they make their final decision and it can certainly be a sensitive subject on both sides of the equation. Many instances of dishonesty have occurred, but if handled correctly, it can be a beneficial experience for both the family and the coach. The ultimate answer to the question is that "yes" athletic scholarships can be negotiable if a full ride is not offered, however, as with many parts of the recruiting process it does depend on the situation. There are some cases where the amount of money being offered is truly the maximum amount that a coach has available for you. All of their [...]

RecruitPKB: Scheduling Visits

By |2017-09-13T11:49:02-04:00January 25th, 2017|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

A very important, proactive step in the college recruiting process is to schedule unofficial visits as early as possible. The days of official visits are almost over now that recruiting starts so early. You must be assertive and take the initiative to try and set up visits early in the process. Visits will not only give you an opportunity to meet with a coach but they also help you begin to figure out what you want in a school and help to motivate you to work hard in order to reach the level it takes to play at those particular schools. It gives you the chance to physically see what you are working for day in and day out. It can be difficult for freshmen and sophomores to set up visits since coaches can't reply to emails or return phone calls, but with a little persistence, you [...]

RecruitPKB: Bring on 2017

By |2017-09-13T11:44:43-04:00January 11th, 2017|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, holiday season, and a Happy New Year. I know I sure did! I was able to spend a lot of time with my families and friends, ate way too much good food and relaxed a bit as the year came to a close. I am really excited about 2017 and what is in store for PKBGT and RecruitPKB.   As we kick this year off, I wanted to give the opportunity for you to send me some questions and thoughts on topics you would like for me to cover in my articles, webinars, and seminars. These can be specific to college recruiting or more general in regards to player development, junior golf, female athletes, etc. You can email your thoughts and questions to me at bjackson@pkbgt.org. Right now, we are working on updating our RecruitPKB packages for this year to [...]

RecruitPKB: Parent Role in College Recruiting Part 2

By |2017-09-13T11:49:02-04:00January 5th, 2017|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

Part 2 in the Parent Role in College Recruiting series will cover the topic of "Parent's Role at Tournaments from a Coach's Perspective". This week we will cover your role at tournaments from the perspective of a college coach. Coaches are watching the parents as much as they are the recruits at tournaments. They understand how much of an influence a parent can have on their child's golf game and what behaviors they may have to deal with if that player comes to their university. A few red flags that coaches are looking for with parent behavior include: Hovering while the player is warming up or during post round practice Getting upset over bad shots or bad rounds Walking away while other players in the group are still hitting Conversing too much with your child on the golf course Over-excitement A few positive behaviors that coaches like [...]

PerformPKB: Junior Golf Back Pain

By |2018-03-21T20:45:00-04:00December 18th, 2016|Physical Performance Articles|0 Comments

This article is part of guest series to the RecruitPKB "Complete Golfer" program by Chris Finn, MSPT, CSCS, owner of Par4Success in Cary, North Carolina.  --- The most common injury in golf is back pain, accounting for over 35% of all injuries sustained in the sport.  These are the numbers for adult golfers.  There have not been any studies on the frequency in junior golfers, but based on the fact that whenever I ask a large group of junior golfers to raise their hands if they have had back pain when playing golf and about 60-70% raise their hands, I am guessing the number might be higher in juniors. The number of 10-14 year olds who seek out therapy for their back pain related to golf is both frightening and 100% preventable.  Last month I wrote about the great strides that have been made in the world [...]

RecruitPKB: Parent Role in College Recruiting Part 1

By |2017-09-13T11:49:03-04:00December 15th, 2016|College Recruiting Articles|1 Comment

While this can be a very sensitive subject with many parents, it is an extremely vital part of the recruiting process. Part 1 in the Parent Role in College Recruiting series will cover the topic of "how to support your junior golfer without being overbearing". I have been asked this question numerous times from parents who are concerned with doing enough to push their son/daughter to get better but not so much that they drive them away from the game or develop resentment. While I am not a parent myself, I have been able to experience golf from several different viewpoints and learned a tremendous amount from each. Being an adult and working with both the junior golfers and their parents, I now have a huge level of respect for the sacrifices, commitment, and frustrations that a parent must face in order to help their child be [...]
