RecruitPKB: Bad Breaks and Excuses

If there is one thing inevitable about every golfer, it's that at some point in time they are going to get a bad break on the golf course. It may be a bad kick, a divot in the middle of the fairway, a buried lie in the sand or a putt lipping out. Probably the most fun and exciting part of the game of golf is the amount of good and bad breaks that can happen during a round. There are so many elements on the golf course, that nature is bound to throw you a few "unfair" bounces and lies on occasion. Several years ago Jordan Speith had an incident when a camera or phone went off in his backswing from the greenside bunker during the playoff at the Shell Houston Open. Initially, he got upset but he gathered himself and went on to try and [...]

RecruitPKB: Taking Time Off From Golf

I wanted to share a conversation I had with a young lady on Instagram a while ago. Her: What are your thoughts on taking a break from golf? I mean not picking up a club for two to 4 weeks? Me: I see absolutely nothing wrong with it if you feel like it’s needed and necessary. I would almost encourage it at some points through the process, especially if you’ve never taken a break like that before. Her: Thank you.  I just see other girls still grinding it out but I don’t want to get burned out. I just need to learn to focus on me and not have FOMO (fear of missing out). Thank you! Me: Yes exactly! Everyone is different. I promise that a couple of weeks off will not hurt you in the long run. There is no reason to feel like it should [...]

RecruitPKB: New Year Ahead

As we say goodbye to 2022, it's also a great time to reflect back on what you learned this year. This is a great topic to share with the coaches that you have been reaching out to and give them some insight into your year. While you want to focus on the year ahead, take a few minutes to consider what you have learned this year and some of the ways you have grown as a student-athlete Did you learn any new skills? Have you developed better habits? Were you able to help others in need? What did you learn to appreciate more? What obstacles did you overcome? What we some of the highlights of the year? Jot down a few of these and reflect on them as you begin to shift your sights on the new year!     Written by: Brandi Jackson, RecruitPKB College Consultant [...]

RecruitPKB: Starting the Process – Maintain Communication

It’s one step to send out some initial emails but it takes ongoing communication to generate interest and develop a relationship with the coach. Based on NCAA rules, DI coaches can't respond to your emails or speak to you until June 15th prior to your junior year. So it will mostly just be update emails that you will be sending up to that point to try and generate their interest. If it's after June 15th then hopefully you are currently in communication with some college coaches and receiving feedback on their part. Whichever scenario, it is necessary to maintain some form of communication and updates as you move throughout this process. If you are being too unrealistic with your options then you may not be very productive in your efforts, so do keep that in mind. If you are struggling with what to say in your updates [...]

RecruitPKB: Starting the Process – Contact Coaches

While I am an advocate for having big goals to work hard to achieve and keeping some dream schools on your list, you have to be cautious about what percentage of dream schools vs realistic schools you have on your list. I say to contact 50+ schools but as with most parts of this process that is dependent on many factors. The reason I use that number is for the average player who is doing this process on their own, without knowledgeable or reliable guidance, I have seen a trend of what happens if they create a list of less than that. When I am providing general advice and tips on steps of the process I am trying to consider what most players will tend to do and why they may not get the coach responses they are expecting. So if a player takes the time to [...]

RecruitPKB: Starting the Process – Do the Research

It’s never too early to research schools and golf programs. This will give you an idea of what it takes to play for those programs so you can set goals and get to work! Sites like www.collegegolf.com and www.golfstat.com are both great ways to learn more about the golf programs! You can also check out the team and school websites for both academic and athletic information. Keep in mind the academic criteria for the school, as it’s not always going to be a guarantee that being a recruited athlete will get you admitted. And when looking at the current players’ scores remember a few things.. courses are longer, tougher, and played in fall and spring only and it’s a higher level of pressure and demand that college players are under so scores aren’t exactly reflective of their junior golf days. Also, don’t compare yourself to the 5th [...]

RecruitPKB: Verbal vs. NLI

With some recent questions surrounding the NLI signing period, I wanted to do a comparison of the difference between a  verbal commitment and actually signing your NLI. A verbal agreement is not legally binding, however, the NLI legally binds a student-athlete (SA) to attend that institution for one academic year in exchange for athletic aid. While a verbal commitment can be made at any time after communication begins on June 15th prior to junior year, the SA can only sign the NLI during the designated signing period starting in November of the SA's senior year. A verbal commitment is an agreement between an SA and the current coach. The NLI is an agreement between the SA and the institution. Once the NLI is signed all recruiting discussions with other coaches must end. If an SA has made a verbal commitment and the coach leaves, the SA is [...]

RecruitPKB: What is the NLI

The official start of the NLI signing period will kick off on November 9, 2022, and will continue until August 1, 2023, for all current high school seniors. You can sign at any time during this period. When you sign the NLI you agree to attend the institution full-time for one academic year in exchange for athletic aid for that academic year. You do not have to re-sign the NLI each year, your institution will notify you if your scholarship is renewed after the first year. The NLI is a binding agreement between the student-athlete and the institution, whereas a verbal commitment is only between the student-athlete and the coach and is not legally binding. So once you’ve signed the NLI, if the coach were to leave, you’re still legally obligated to attend that institution. The NLI is ONLY signed by DI and DII student-athletes who are [...]
