Don’t Let the Commitment Posts Shake You
By Brandi Jackson | RecruitPKB powered by: Brandi Jackson Golf
One of the hardest parts of the college golf recruiting journey is scrolling through social media and seeing another player announce her commitment. It’s easy to let comparison creep in — to feel like you’re behind, like you’re missing something, like everyone else is figuring it out except you.
But here’s what I want you to remember: what you see online is never the full picture.
Every player’s journey is different, and those commitment posts leave out a lot. Here’s what they don’t tell you:
1. Timing isn’t everything — and it’s rarely what it looks like.
A commitment in the fall of junior year and a commitment in the fall of senior year are two completely different situations. What coaches are looking for early in the process changes as the recruiting cycle moves along. Timing is shaped by so many factors that comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges.
2. Relationships open doors that talent alone can’t.
That recruit may have attended that school’s camp, had a family connection to the university, or simply built an earlier relationship with the coach. Those things matter — and they don’t always mean she is a better player than you.
3. Scholarship details are almost never public.
Unless you know the full picture, you can’t assume what that commitment actually means financially. Scholarship amounts vary widely, and some commitments don’t include athletic scholarship money at all. What you imagine is probably not the reality.
4. Interest and enthusiasm are more powerful than most recruits realize.
Coaches notice the girls who show up with genuine excitement — who ask great questions, follow up consistently, and make it clear they truly want to be part of that program. Sometimes that enthusiasm tips the scales more than a scoring average does.
5. Social media shows you a fraction of what’s actually happening.
For every commitment post you see, there are dozens you never will. The recruiting landscape is massive, and the timeline stretches across months and years. One post does not define your path — or your timeline.
The Bottom Line
College golf recruiting is not a race, and it is not one-size-fits-all. Comparison is the thief of focus — and right now, your focus is everything. Stay locked in on building relationships, improving your game, and trusting your process. The right fit will come at the right time.
And it will be worth the wait.
