News: Brooks Wins VA State Title

LORTON, VA -- OCTOBER 24, 2012 This year, given another opportunity, Shannon Brooks closed the deal and the Madison Warhawks’ sophomore is the Virginia High School League’s Girls State Open champion as a result. Brooks won the 2012 title Oct. 23 with a 1-over, two-day total of 72-73–145 on the par-72 Laurel Hill Golf Club course in Lorton. She won by two shots over defending champion Abby Portyrata of Clover Hill and Lyndsey Hunnell of Lord Botetourt, who each carded 147 totals. “I thought it would take par golf to win,” said Brooks, who was the first-round leader. Nguyen Wins MD State Girls Title

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- OCTOBER 24, 2012 After finishing as the girls’ state runner-up the past two years, Atholton junior Bryana Nguyen was so fearful of another disappointment that her hands trembled while she attempted a seven-foot putt on the final hole. Nguyen sank the shot to secure a one-stroke victory with a two-day score of 73-71 — 144. “I was so relieved when the ball went in and it was over,” Nguyen said. “The girl I lost to the last two years graduated, so it would have been a shame if I couldn’t get it done this year.” Just behind her was Wootton’s Delaney Shah, who used four birdies on Wednesday to fire a final score of 3-over-par 145 and help deliver the Patriots’ team title.

Anderson Wins VA 3A Title

VIRGINIA BEACH - OCTOBER 9, 2012 Manchester junior Lyberty Anderson entered Tuesday's final round of the Group AAA state golf tournament trailing Jason Park by one shot. And after 17 holes at Red Wing Lake Golf Club, Park, a senior at James River, still held a one-shot lead heading to the par-5 No. 9. But Anderson is no stranger to pressure. She won the VHSL girls state title as a freshman and three consecutive Richmond Women's Golf Association city tournament titles. Anderson reached the green in two shots and sank a 12-foot eagle putt to become the first girl to win the Group AAA tournament since Chantilly's Jenny Suh in 2002. "I was actually shaking a little bit," Anderson said. "I was a little bit nervous and I wasn't that confident over it, honestly." But when she saw the ball drop in the hole, she couldn't hold [...]
