News: Porvasnik Wins Ohio HS Championship

NOVEMBER, 2012 - The awards were piling high in her Hinckley Township bedroom and the commitment to Ohio State was made after an exhausting search up and down the East Coast. Still, there was one thing missing from Jessica Porvasnik’s resume: A Division I state championship. It was the only link needed to an otherwise incredible high school career by the golf machine out of Highland. Though the game she loves doesn’t always reward the best player, wearing that gold medal was a burning desire in Porvasnik’s heart. (PHOTO ILLUSTRATION BY RON SCHWANE) What makes the first four-time Gazette MVP in Medina County history tick is her will to be great. Second is for losers. There’s only room for one at the top of the mantle. Porvasnik was already mentally tough well beyond her 17 years. [...]

News: Bae Wins 4A NCHS State Title

PINEHURST, NC - OCTOBER 30, 2012 Tears again came to Sarah Bae’s eyes as she walked off the 18th green at Pinehurst No. 6 Golf Course Tuesday. But these were different tears from last year, when the Athens Drive golfer finished third individually at the 4A girls’ golf state championships only to realize later that her performance was enough to help capture a team title. These were tears of happiness, gratitude and the sweet relief of a finally grabbing the girls golf championship that had been her goal since her freshman year. Bae sank a 21-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to defeat New Bern’s Ashley Osiecki. The only qualifier from her school, Bae had no teammates to celebrate with this year, but her friends from conference schools like Fuquay-Varina, Middle Creek, Green Hope and Lee County rooted her on and were the first to [...]

News: Rusher Wins 1A/2A NCHS State Title

FOXFIRE VILLAGE— OCTOBER 30, 2012 Defending champion Isabella Rusher of Salisbury fired the only par round of the entire tournament on Tuesday to pull away and win the individual crown in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s state 1-A/2-A women’s golf championships at the West Course at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club in Foxfire Village. Rusher won the championship for the second consecutive year but did so much more easily this time. The course was set at par 71 and a 5,765-yard layout for the championship. North Surry’s Kasey Tolbert had two rounds of 79 for a 158 total, good for second place eight shots back. LORTON, VA -- OCTOBER 24, 2012 This year, given another opportunity, Shannon Brooks closed the deal and the Madison Warhawks’ sophomore is the Virginia High School League’s Girls State Open champion as a result. Brooks won the 2012 title Oct. 23 with a 1-over, two-day total of 72-73–145 on the par-72 Laurel Hill Golf Club course in Lorton. She won by two shots over defending champion Abby Portyrata of Clover Hill and Lyndsey Hunnell of Lord Botetourt, who each carded 147 totals. “I thought it would take par golf to win,” said Brooks, who was the first-round leader. Brooks also was the first-round leader a year ago when she shot 70, but finished third by struggling to a second-round 79. “That made me nervous,” Brooks said in regard to leading again after the first round. “I bogeyed the first hole, then I calmed down and hit the [...]

Nguyen Wins MD State Girls Title

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- OCTOBER 24, 2012 After finishing as the girls’ state runner-up the past two years, Atholton junior Bryana Nguyen was so fearful of another disappointment that her hands trembled while she attempted a seven-foot putt on the final hole. Nguyen sank the shot to secure a one-stroke victory with a two-day score of 73-71 — 144. “I was so relieved when the ball went in and it was over,” Nguyen said. “The girl I lost to the last two years graduated, so it would have been a shame if I couldn’t get it done this year.” Just behind her was Wootton’s Delaney Shah, who used four birdies on Wednesday to fire a final score of 3-over-par 145 and help deliver the Patriots’ team title.

Anderson Wins VA 3A Title

VIRGINIA BEACH - OCTOBER 9, 2012 Manchester junior Lyberty Anderson entered Tuesday's final round of the Group AAA state golf tournament trailing Jason Park by one shot. And after 17 holes at Red Wing Lake Golf Club, Park, a senior at James River, still held a one-shot lead heading to the par-5 No. 9. But Anderson is no stranger to pressure. She won the VHSL girls state title as a freshman and three consecutive Richmond Women's Golf Association city tournament titles. Anderson reached the green in two shots and sank a 12-foot eagle putt to become the first girl to win the Group AAA tournament since Chantilly's Jenny Suh in 2002. "I was actually shaking a little bit," Anderson said. "I was a little bit nervous and I wasn't that confident over it, honestly." But when she saw the ball drop in the hole, she couldn't hold [...]
