RecruitPKB: NCAA Rules and Regulations

By |2018-04-30T14:14:51-04:00April 26th, 2018|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

Knowing the NCAA rules and regulations will not only help you navigate the process better but it will also show a coach that you are serious and prepared. Keep in mind, a student-athlete can always make phone calls and send emails to coaches. A student-athlete can tour the campus at any point but coaches or athletic staff aren't allowed to meet with prospective student-athletes until the designated time. Coaches can make verbal offers at any point but NLI's are not signed until designated periods of a recruit's senior year Similar to the Rules of Golf there are many different variations and interpretations of the rules. If you aren't sure of the rules you can contact the NCAA, Eligibility Center or me if you have any questions. Dates to Know: September 1st of Junior Year: DI coaches may send recruiting emails, make phone calls, send texts and use [...]

Recruit PKB: Building a Resume

By |2018-04-18T10:58:03-04:00April 19th, 2018|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

As the PKBGT continues to grow, many new players and parents begin to seek advice about the college recruiting process, so I wanted to take us back to some of the early stages of the process for the next several weeks and cover the basics of getting started. Building a quality resume is one of the most important steps in the college recruiting process. While your game and on course demeanor will speak for itself out on the course, your resume will be the first insight a coach has into you as an all-around person. There are many ways to create a resume ranging from a simple document version, your own website or utilizing an online resume service. I recommend players utilize the Junior Golf Scoreboard resume service because it ensures you have a completed resume and it will automatically update the majority of your results for [...]

RecruitPKB: Tournament Schedule

By |2018-04-05T11:30:43-04:00April 12th, 2018|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

A very important step to remember is to email coaches with your upcoming schedule. Now that we are in full-time spring golf and the summer months are just around the corner it is a great time to do this. Coaches have no way of knowing where you will be playing unless you tell them. So, if you want them to come out and watch you play, make sure you let them know where you are going to be. Don't wait until the end of summer to send them your results, make the opportunity available for them to come out and watch you play. For 2019 recruits, coaches are able to reply to your emails so it may be a good question to ask if they plan to recruit at a tournament nearby that you are considering playing in. If you are a sophomore or younger you don't [...]

RecruitPKB: Masters Takeaways

By |2018-04-05T11:35:10-04:00April 5th, 2018|Player Performance Articles|0 Comments

One of the best takeaways a young player can get from Masters week is to watch the Masters on the Range coverage. If you don't get a chance to watch, here are a few takeaways from how the pros warm up: 📌 Most aren’t going to get too technical the morning of a tournament round 📌 They focus on balance and tempo with their swings 📌 They give themselves different lies around the practice greens 📌 They focus on putting fundamentals, usually with a training aid or some tees 📌 They take their time and focus on every shot they hit 📌 They aren’t rushed or anxious Your warmup is NEVER the time to get frustrated or in your head about not hitting it perfect or not feeling 100% confident. It’s the time to accept what is going on that day, trust your abilities and not fight [...]

Obviously, the parent's will have a major influence on their daughter's college decision, but trying to help your daughter make the right decision for herself can be a difficult task. Below are a few tips to help the parents guide their daughter through her decision-making process. Review all of the positives and negatives for each school: Help your daughter create a positives and negatives list for each school as she takes visits, communicates with coaches and does research. PerformPKB: How Should I Spend My Practice Time – Part 2

By |2018-03-29T10:09:50-04:00March 28th, 2018|Player Performance Articles|0 Comments

In Part 1, we analyzed how to measure your performance to provide context and data to develop a practice plan.  Knowing what to practice and how much time to spend in the different facets of the game particular to your scoring and shot patterns sets you up for success.  Now, you will need to understand the various different ways you can practice and what you can achieve with each type: We know the distances to practice, so we need to know how we should practice.  There are four main variations of practice; block practice, random practice, scrimmage (or game-like) and no purpose practice: Block Practice - Another way to think of block practice is technique practice.   Most golfers spend the vast majority of time in this area.   Block practice is needed, especially when you are making modifications to your technique.  You should avoid excessive block practice for [...]

RecruitPKB: Parent Role and the Coaches

By |2018-03-22T16:12:41-04:00March 22nd, 2018|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

This week's "Parent Role in the College Recruiting Process" will cover a parent's role with college coaches. The relationship a parent builds with a college coach through the process can have a major influence on the coach's decision. Below are a few areas to be aware of as a parent so that you as well can make the best impression on your daughter's future coach. Say hi to coaches at tournaments but don't approach them: Because recruiting rules can vary depending on a player's grad year, always stick to the side of caution when you see a coach at tournaments. Be friendly and say hi but try to allow them to begin a conversation if they choose to. Some coaches are more talkative and will carry on conversations with parents, others just want to be left to themselves so they can watch the players and evaluate. The same [...]

PerformPKB: 7 Stages of Long Term Athletic Development for Golfers

By |2018-03-21T20:43:20-04:00March 21st, 2018|Physical Performance Articles|0 Comments

Individuals can experience failed attempts to participate in organized sports when too much emphasis is placed on competition and not enough attention on developing proper athleticism (appropriate movement skills). If you have limited movement skills, you stop participating.  This leads to decreased interest in physical activity and a failure to develop physical literacy (proper training to improve athleticism) in a sequential and progressive manner. Because of this, it is important that your first experience in physical activity be a positive one. The Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model describes what children, youth, and adults need to be doing at the right time to develop in sport or activity. Both kids and adults will get active, stay active, and reach the greatest peaks of sport performance when following this model. Long term commitment to physical literacy and sport skill development is vital to optimize athletic potential. This commitment requires [...]

PerformPKB: How Should I Spend My Practice Time – Part 1

By |2018-03-29T10:08:52-04:00March 21st, 2018|Player Performance Articles|0 Comments

Practice is essential in improving, but most players fail to practice effectively or efficiently.  I look at data to help analyze how I can help improve a players practice.   Every tournament player that I coach I suggest them to use ShotbyShot.com, a statistical analysis program designed by Peter Sanders.  By tracking data, we receive similar data to what the PGA Tour players can get.  Through analyzation, we can track tendencies, in particular, knowing the distances they play the most strokes from. We coach a lot of tournament golfers; whether they are Tour Players, top amateurs, or junior golfers hoping to play in college, the goal is the still the same: they want to know how to improve so they can shoot lower scores in competition. To truly accomplish this, we must measure.  I have developed the Precision Coaching Program to measure practice similar to the way you [...]
