RecruitPKB: Pin Sheets

By |2017-09-13T11:45:20-04:00June 23rd, 2016|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

These days pin sheets are almost a thing of the past. Tour players must rely on them because they can only use range finders during practice rounds. Many junior golfers admit that they don't even know how to read a pin sheet. While you can find out the exact yardage to the pin with a range finder there is a lot you can't learn that could affect club and shot selection. So take the time to learn how to read a pin sheet. Pin sheets will tell you the yardage to the front and back of the green, providing you with a better idea of what club will guarantee you get to the green and which one will keep you from going over the green. Pin sheets will also tell you how much green is to the left and right of the pin so you will know [...]

RecruitPKB: College Coach Panel

By |2017-09-13T11:49:06-04:00June 1st, 2016|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

During the PKB Open Championships, we hosted a Recruit PKB College Coach Panel where the ECU, UNCW, UNCG, Western Carolina, UNC-Pembroke and Catawba coaches all participated. I wanted to share a little insight about some topics that were discussed during the panel. First, as many questions pertaining to the contact rules were asked during the panel I want to direct you to one of my blogs which addresses some of the important NCAA rules that you need to be aware of through the process. You can read them HERE. Top questions from the panel: "What are some of the mistakes you see players make?" - Asking a coach to return a call or email when the rules don't allow it - Not identifying your full name and graduation year - Always trying to call a coach in their office during the afternoon [...]

RecruitPKB: 3 Myths about College Recruiting

By |2017-09-13T11:49:06-04:00May 26th, 2016|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

Between the availability of information through the internet, the demand for scholarship money, and the increase in competition among young golfers, the recruiting process has changed drastically in the past 10 years. After being in the junior golf and college recruiting world as an advisor and consultant for almost 7 years, I wanted to take the time to explain and dispel a few of the myths that are floating around misleading and misguiding junior golf families. Golf Scholarships are Abundant - Golf is a great avenue for a young female to earn scholarship money, but it is not quite what many families anticipate it being. While there are some scholarships that do go unused on the girls side, those are usually at small, rural and lower ranked academic schools. Over the years, it has gotten very competitive among the females for golf scholarship money of any amount. [...]

RecruitPKB: Get Good at Playing Golf not Practicing Golf

By |2017-09-13T11:45:20-04:00May 18th, 2016|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

My home golf course as a junior golfer didn't have much of a practice facility. You could only hit up to 170yds on the driving range and there was just a small practice green for chipping and putting. When I look back I actually think it was a benefit because I learned how to play golf on the golf course. My dad and I would go out late in the afternoons and spend time practicing on the golf course. This didn't just mean hitting an extra shot here and there or rolling a few putts. We would actually practice on the course. I would learn how to hit shots out of trouble, get up and down around the greens and practice my wedges from inside 100yds. I know many courses may not have the access or allow you to do some of this but if you can [...]

RecruitPKB: Dedicated to the Coaches

By |2017-09-13T11:49:06-04:00May 12th, 2016|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

A couple of years ago I wrote an article similar to this one but I felt it was time to update it after seeing even more about the life that a college coach leads on a daily basis. No, I don't have personal experience as a college coach, but many of my friends from junior, college and professional golf have all taken on roles as assistants and head coaches at colleges all over the country. I spend a lot of time talking with coaches, walking with them at tournaments and picking their brains. So, while I don't see what they go through first hand on a daily basis, I thought I would try to be their voice to the junior golfers, the parents, and the current collegiate golfers. You won't find many that will complain because they love their job and know the territory that comes with [...]

RecruitPKB: Coaches Circle

By |2017-09-13T11:50:57-04:00April 29th, 2016|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

If there is one thing I can't emphasize enough it is that coaches talk to each other. Many of the coaches have known each other since we all started playing junior golf over 20 years ago. The college golf world can be a very small world and while the coaches are competing against each other both on the course and with recruiting, they are still going to talk among themselves. It can certainly be a cut-throat process but for the most part, the coaches have respect for one another and will be honest about the details of particular players recruiting process. There are some exceptions on the coaches end as well where some dishonesty takes place so always make sure you ask the right questions. You don't have to tell a coach every detail about the offers you have from other schools but NEVER lie about it. [...]

RecruitPKB: Time Management

By |2017-09-13T11:50:58-04:00April 20th, 2016|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

Time management is a recurring topic that many college coaches say their players struggle with on a regular basis. So why not prepare now for that transition. Once you get to college you will have to manage classes, workouts, practice, meetings, laundry, social activities, studying and traveling. It may seem easy to manage your time now, but you won't have your parents there to help keep you on track and there are many more distractions once you get to college. You will be responsible for yourself, your time and your priorities. Your college coach will determine much of your schedule but during the season they are only allowed to schedule 20 hours/week of practice, qualifying, workouts and meetings and 8 hours/week during the off season so you will have to manage your time during the other hours of the day. And most coaches will expect you to put [...]
