RecruitPKB: How to say I am not interested

By |2024-03-21T16:56:58-04:00March 20th, 2024|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

I've had this question asked several times by players over the years, "how do I tell a coach that I am not interested?".  This may be a question you face at different stages of communication with a coach so I wanted to address a couple of scenarios and give you some insight into how I have my players address this topic. If you receive an initial email from a coach at a school that you know you would not attend no matter what, it is still common courtesy to send a reply back. Even if your resume is much stronger than the girls who play for that program, NEVER think you are better than the players, the school, or the coach. We have all been at different stages in our games, we all have different goals of playing (and coaching) college golf and many coaches work tirelessly to [...]

RecruitPKB: What You Think You Deserve

By |2024-02-29T09:21:47-05:00February 28th, 2024|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

"Golf is the one sport that doesn't give you what you 'think you deserve'." - Danielle Kang In consulting young female golfers who are extremely hard-working, intelligent, and disciplined I see their struggles with expectations and perfectionism on the golf course. So many of these young ladies have the mentality that when you study hard you expect to get good grades, therefore if you work hard at golf you expect to have good scores. And while yes, hard work and good golf scores do go hand in hand, that mentality of expectation with academics doesn’t exactly work the same with your golf game. And when that mentality takes over a young golfer's mind it is extremely difficult for them to adjust, relax, and allow things to happen once they struggle in a golf tourney. Hard work needs to build trust - not expectation. I am no golf [...]

Recruit PKB: Questions to Ask Yourself

By |2024-02-08T14:05:59-05:00February 7th, 2024|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

As the spring and summer months creep upon us, many girls will be making their college decisions or kicking off the process on June 15th. It's a very exciting time but also a time to take a few minutes to ask yourself some questions about what you want out of your college experience. It easy to get wrapped up in the lure of a school, the golf program, the facilities, and the athletic department. Coaches will do their best to impress you when you are on a visit. It's part of their job to convince you that the school and golf program is outstanding. It's your job to decide if it will actually be the best fit for you or not. Below are a few of the questions that every player needs to ask before making their final decision to play college golf. Is your personality compatible [...]

RecruitPKB: Focus On What You Can Do

By |2024-01-11T16:46:18-05:00January 17th, 2024|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

Continuing in this series.. “What you think you need vs what you actually need." This one is comparing yourself to others when you need to be focused on what you can do. So I feel like we all KNOW this but sometimes we just need a reminder every now and then. Stop for a second and think if social media didn’t exist. Seriously, stop for a second. Take a deep breath and just think about it. Let all the stuff that consumes your thoughts that come strictly from what you see on social media escape your perception of yourself, your golf game, and the recruiting process. Would you tend to just stay in your own lane and focus on your own timing and goals? Would you feel better about yourself and your golf game? Would you be happier and less anxious about the process? Clearly, we can’t [...]

RecruitPKB: What is the NLI

By |2023-11-02T13:40:15-04:00November 1st, 2023|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

The official start of the NLI signing period will kick off on November 8, 2023, and will continue until August 1, 2024, for all current high school seniors. You can sign at any time during this period. When you sign the NLI you agree to attend the institution full-time for one academic year in exchange for athletic aid for that academic year. You do not have to re-sign the NLI each year, your institution will notify you if your scholarship is renewed after the first year. The NLI is a binding agreement between the student-athlete and the institution, whereas a verbal commitment is only between the student-athlete and the coach and is not legally binding. So once you’ve signed the NLI, if the coach were to leave, you’re still legally obligated to attend that institution. The NLI is ONLY signed by DI and DII student-athletes who are [...]

RecruitPKB: What’s Next as a 2025 Recruit?

By |2023-08-30T15:14:46-04:00August 30th, 2023|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

As a 2025 recruit, the next few months do get very specific to each individual recruit and their situation but I want to share a few thoughts to guide you. As you head into the start of junior year I'm sure you have some excitement as you wrap up the first summer of the recruiting process being active. For some of you, if you played really well this summer (as a general rule of thumb, you averaged under 75 in state and national tournaments), then you have potentially generated interest from the coaches who are actively recruiting 2025 recruits. If so you may be asked on some visits this fall and could even make your decision. Keep in mind, that it is a small percentage of all 2025 recruits who will make their decision this fall, so don't stress if you aren't in that phase of the [...]

RecruitPKB: Parent Tip #3

By |2023-08-17T16:22:10-04:00August 13th, 2023|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

As your daughter gets older it is extremely important to give her the freedom and independence to manage herself at tournaments. Keep extra snacks and water for her. Carry extra rain/cold gear if needed. Help her prepare and provide reminders, but allow her to take ownership of her preparation, warm-up, and tournament round. Just a few ways to give her the responsibility and freedom…. Let her decide when she wants to arrive at the course - give her the responsibility of time management for her warmup Have her check in at registration if necessary - the more people and staff she can meet the more impressions she can make, and the more she has to speak for herself, the more confident she will be She can double-check her bag for what she needs - she’s been playing golf long enough to know what she needs for each [...]

RecruitPKB: Excellence over Perfection

By |2023-07-13T14:53:43-04:00July 12th, 2023|College Recruiting Articles|0 Comments

"Perfection is motivated by fear. Excellence is motivated by love." One thing I've come to notice in the 14 years of consulting, evaluating, and watching female golfers, is their tendency to seek perfection in the game of golf. The girls have a mentality that makes them fear they are going to do something wrong or that if it's not perfect then it's not good enough. They expect every shot to be perfect. They worry a bad shot or missed putt means they made a mistake. They worry about what will happen if they miss a green. Or if they make a double bogey. Or if they hit it OB. They fear they are letting their coach or their parents down. They fear they won't get recruited to play college golf. Instead of seeking perfection on the golf course, focus on seeking excellence. Excellence is driven by [...]
