RecruitPKB: Focused on my Score

I've been having some discussions recently with some of my players about how they get caught up in their score and wondering how they can prevent that. And my answer was, you can't! In my opinion, it's just part of getting better and knowing that you’re close to shooting a new low round. It is just part of the process. You can't really just ignore the obvious at that point, which is your score. To expect a young golfer to not think about their score when that is really the ultimate goal they are aiming for is really tough to ask. But thankfully, each time it happens and you are aware of it, then it gets easier the next time. So I recommend giving yourself a little bit of a break from thinking that it’s such a negative thing right now. When you’re in those moments, [...]

RecruitPKB: Contact the Coaches

Based on the NCAA rules that apply to the current period for your grad year, once you get a resume put together and do some research on schools and programs, you should begin to send out intro emails to coaches. A well-written intro email (by the student-athlete) is the first step in contacting the coaches. This email needs to provide some insight about you as a player, student, and person and have your resume/video attached or linked. You can use the same format for all of your intro emails but make sure they are specific and personal to each coach. Use your research notes! You can send intro emails at any point, there are no rules or restrictions on players sending emails to coaches. But a coach can not reply to emails or answer phone calls until June 15th prior to junior year so keep that [...]

RecruitPKB: Build a Resume

A good quality resume that a college coach can easily access and get all of the important information they need to see is a critical step in the process. This is typically the first impression you are going to make on them. There are several ways you can create a resume. It can be online via a personal website, you can use a resume service such as the one that @juniorgolfscoreboard offers, or you can do a simple document/pdf. Any of these options is perfectly fine, but most importantly keep in mind this is a resume, so it needs to be professional and easy to follow. Don't be afraid to have a little fun and be creative with it, especially if that is your personality, but if you go overboard it may turn a coach off. Most importantly, it needs to be clear and concise with all [...]

RecruitPKB: Increase Your Scholarship Chances

If you want to have dream schools on your list that is completely ok, I love to see a female golfer willing to work hard to play at the highest level possible. But if scholarship money is a top priority, then you need to focus most of your time and energy on the realistic schools where you are #1 or #2 on their list. If you only focus on your dream schools where you are on the coach's “interested” list then you will find yourself missing opportunities at great schools and programs where you may receive offers earlier. Scholarship money is not as abundant as many are led to believe so be sure you give yourself the opportunity to earn scholarship money by being realistic with the schools you focus on. RecruitPKB: Ask a College Player

What are 3 things you would have done differently as a junior golfer? “When I was a little girl I always dreamed about playing collegiate and professional golf one day. Now that I am fulfilling part of my dream as a collegiate golfer, looking back there are a few things I would have done differently as a junior. The biggest thing I would have done differently is to change my practice routine to involve more of the things that I really struggled with. Often times, my practice was just broken down into the three main sections of hitting balls at the range, a few chipping drills, and putting. I never really focused on certain aspects of each area that I really struggled with. Now that I am in college, we focus a lot on the weakest areas of our game. I have learned that it is [...]

RecruitPKB: What Does It Mean To Be Coachable

In a recent IGTV episode, I talked with Ryan Mckie of Knight Performance Factory about the ability to be coachable. You can watch the full episode below but here are 3 important takeaways: Open to being challenged means that you will consider new ways to do things and you won’t give up just because it’s difficult for you. Total trust in your coach means that not only are you open to being challenged by them but you are willing to take on their assignments and instructions with total commitment to the process. Willing to ride the waves is a result of both the openness to being challenged and total trust in your coach. You have an understanding of what is best for you and when that needs to take priority. But you know in order to be your best, there are going to be ups and [...]

RecruitPKB: No Better Time Than Now

I have been preaching this for the last few weeks to my own clients and on social media, but after doing an Instagram Live Q and A with the South Carolina Junior Golf Association, where we specifically discussed coach communications during this time, I want to emphasize this one more time before everything starts back to pseudo-normal. Yes, there are some scenarios where this might not apply, but for the most part with any student-athlete entering 8th grade this fall and older, there is no better time than now to at least "introduce" yourself to the coaches. There will not be a better time in this whole process where coaches won't be either traveling, recruiting, conducting practice, or focused on the team. So if you have not taken advantage of this rare time in the college recruiting process it's not too late. If you are more to the stage [...]

RecruitPKB: Virtual Assistant Coach Panel

Another edition of the Huddle Up and Listen Up series of virtual video coach panels is available! Many times the assistant coaches don’t get all the love they deserve so I wanted to shed some light on what their roles are as assistant coaches, how their backgrounds play a part in those roles, and the advice they have for junior golfers who want to play in college. Some REALLY good insight here! ** CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE ZOOM VIDEO ** But for those who may just want a few highlights from the panel here are some of the points that were shared: During practice rounds, don't just go through the motions, grind to figure out the course and consider all possible scenarios so you are prepared for anything during the tournament During practice rounds, think about where you might miss a green, especially on longer [...]
