RecruitPKB: Reflection of 2021

At the start of the new year, I shared with you some things to consider reflecting on from 2021 in order to then plan for 2022. I had all my clients do this assignment, this week I wanted to share some of the most common and most insightful responses that they shared with me. What sentence or phrase sums up your 2021? "A rollercoaster" "Hard work works" "Frustrating but making progress" "Improvise. Adapt. Overcome." "You learn more by losing than by winning,"   What is the biggest challenge you overcame this past year? "Balance between school and golf" "Online school" "Getting back up even when I wasn't seeing the progress" "Letting go of all the negative thoughts I had about my game" "Recovery from surgery/injury"   What was the single biggest time “waster” this year? "Doubting myself and thinking I couldn't" "Not working on my mental game" [...]

RecruitPKB: College Player Feedback Part 2

"Any young girl starting this process should know that, like anything, it takes practice to be comfortable emailing and talking to coaches, so don’t beat yourself up. I remember physically shaking before my first phone call! Do your best to prepare, which is all that you can ultimately control, and learn from every experience just like you do on the golf course." - Allie Kantor 2021 Recruit - UVA Class of 2025   The recruiting process certainly has a way of making you feel uncomfortable, but so does your golf game, college golf, and life in general. Learning to prepare for the steps in the recruiting process is vital to successful communication with college coaches. Those first emails when you hit send and first phone calls with a coach will make you a bit nervous and scared. But the more you learn, prepare and plan for each [...]

RecruitPKB: College Player Feedback Part 1

"I would say my least favorite part of the recruiting process was the very beginning. It was difficult for me to stay motivated at that point when I wasn’t seeing those immediate responses from coaches or a lot of immediate results. But as I learned, it is a long process, and it was definitely worth the patience and time I put in in the end." - Megan Morris, Freshman at Rhodes College   For those who may feel like the process isn’t going as you imagined or you aren’t seeing the results from your work, just remember to stay focused on your efforts. The timeline and end goal may look very different than what you’re anticipating right now, but if you are committed and persistent then it is going to work out as it should. It requires a lot of trust in the process but also not [...]

RecruitPKB: Resume or Questionnaire

Based on a survey I conducted to coaches these were the results on whether to send your resume or questionnaire: Both: 54% Resume Only: 38% Either: 8% Questionnaire Only: 0% So I think the evidence is pretty clear, at a minimum the resume is a must over just filling out the questionnaire. And if you’re really interested, it’s probably a good idea to fill out both! Many times a player's resume does not include all that a coach needs to see so they may automatically default you to fill out the questionnaire to make sure you give them the info needed to properly evaluate you. So if they request that or you find it online, take the time to fill it out, along with sending a good quality resume and a well-written intro email.   If you need any assistance with developing your resume or contacting coaches [...]

RecruitPKB: Tournament Results

Now that we are in the full swing of summer golf, many of you have accumulated an array of tournament results. If you haven't been updating the coaches on a regular basis, then it's a great time to make sure you put them together in a nice format and send them out to college coaches. The results need to be easy for a coach to read and understand. Putting them in a chart or bullet point list is recommended. You need to include the date, tournament name, golf course, scores, finish, and stats. Stats would include the par, yardage, slope, and rating if available. A big majority of coaches will know the conditions and strength of the field for many of the tournaments but if you are emailing coaches outside of your region they may not know them all. If you have already sent an intro email [...]

RecruitPKB: What To Do After A Coach Watches You Play

This week I want to share some tips on what to do after a coach has come out to watch you play. Some of these are relative to where you are in the process with that particular coach but it should give you an idea of things you can do if you know the coach was watching you play. Give them a call. If it is past June 15th prior to junior year, you can give them a call after they came out to watch you play. You may not reach them and get a chance to talk with them but it's a great time to call and get some feedback on what they saw of your game while it's fresh on their mind. You can also give them insight into your game and how you felt about your play which can make a huge difference [...]

RecruitPKB: Increase Your Scholarship Chances

If you want to have dream schools on your list that is completely ok, I love to see a female golfer willing to work hard to play at the highest level possible. But if scholarship money is a top priority, then you need to focus most of your time and energy on the realistic schools where you are #1 or #2 on their list. If you only focus on your dream schools where you are on the coach's “interested” list then you will find yourself missing opportunities at great schools and programs where you may receive offers earlier. Scholarship money is not as abundant as many are led to believe so be sure you give yourself the opportunity to earn scholarship money by being realistic with the schools you focus on. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions at bjackson@pkbgt.org [...]

RecruitPKB: Ask a College Player

What are 3 things you would have done differently as a junior golfer? “When I was a little girl I always dreamed about playing collegiate and professional golf one day. Now that I am fulfilling part of my dream as a collegiate golfer, looking back there are a few things I would have done differently as a junior. The biggest thing I would have done differently is to change my practice routine to involve more of the things that I really struggled with. Often times, my practice was just broken down into the three main sections of hitting balls at the range, a few chipping drills, and putting. I never really focused on certain aspects of each area that I really struggled with. Now that I am in college, we focus a lot on the weakest areas of our game. I have learned that it is [...]

RecruitPKB: What Does It Mean To Be Coachable

In a recent IGTV episode, I talked with Ryan Mckie of Knight Performance Factory about the ability to be coachable. You can watch the full episode below but here are 3 important takeaways: Open to being challenged means that you will consider new ways to do things and you won’t give up just because it’s difficult for you. Total trust in your coach means that not only are you open to being challenged by them but you are willing to take on their assignments and instructions with total commitment to the process. Willing to ride the waves is a result of both the openness to being challenged and total trust in your coach. You have an understanding of what is best for you and when that needs to take priority. But you know in order to be your best, there are going to be ups and [...]
