Last week a new set of NCAA rules were announced but there have been several questions arise. I shared the rules that went into effect in regards to what the college coaches can/can’t do. You can read that blog HERE.

This week I want to address how these rules affect you as a prospective student-athlete (PSA):

  • A PSA can still email, text, and leave a voicemail at any point prior to June 15th before junior year. A coach just cannot reply or answer the call, if so it can only be to say they can not respond or speak
  • A PSA’s coach/instructor cannot have communication with a college coach prior to June 15th before junior year that discusses anything specific to recruiting
  • A verbal agreement should not have the opportunity to take place prior to June 15th before junior year because no recruiting conversations should have taken place prior to that date
  • Official and unofficial visits can begin on August 1st, even if the PSA has not started their junior year
  • PSA will need to submit your transcript and be registered through the NCAA Eligibility Center prior to taking an official visit

While the point in these new rules is to shift recruiting away from early commitments, it will still be the responsibility of the PSA to be proactive and stay in touch with the coaches on their list. Time will only tell how this is going to affect the process with timelines for visits to take place and decisions to be made. Camps and showcases will continue to be great opportunities to make an impression on a college coach and have the chance to chat with them about non-recruiting insight.
