How many of you feel like the time you spend on the golf course (when it's not a tournament) can be a bit repetitive and often times not very productive? It's easy to run out and play 9 holes or maybe 18 and not really have much focus or accountability to what you are doing. Then a tournament rolls around and all of the sudden the bad shots have consequences, you have to actually hit that shot from under the trees and you have to putt out every single putt (no gimmies). RecruitPKB: Simple Short Game Drill
This is by far the most productive, true to real golf, short game drill you can practice. It is also one of the simplest ones. This was always a part of our weekly drills when I played at Furman and it made a huge difference in my short game confidence. Our coach would set it up for us and give us a target score. You can also play this as a match against a partner. If possible, I believe it works best when you set all 9 holes up ahead of time. Otherwise you may catch yourself making the last few shots easy to insure you beat your target score. Play 9 (or 18) holes of up and down. Give yourself a target score (ex. 27). RecruitPKB: Pin Sheets
These days pin sheets are almost a thing of the past. Tour players must rely on them because they can only use range finders during practice rounds. Many junior golfers admit that they don't even know how to read a pin sheet. While you can find out the exact yardage to the pin with a range finder there is a lot you can't learn that could affect club and shot selection. So take the time to learn how to read a pin sheet. Pin sheets will tell you the yardage to the front and back of the green, providing you with a better idea of what club will guarantee you get to the green and which one will keep you from going over the green. During the PKB Open Championships, we hosted a Recruit PKB College Coach Panel where the ECU, UNCW, UNCG, Western Carolina, UNC-Pembroke and Catawba coaches all participated. I wanted to share a little insight about some topics that were discussed during the panel. RecruitPKB: Learn from Lexi
I hope many of you had the chance to watch the ANA Inspiration this past weekend, if not you missed a great tournament finish with some moments that a young girl could definitely learn a lot from. By now we all know that Lydia Ko is a phenomenal player and her attitude on the course is certainly one to pay attention to and try to mimic, but the player who impressed me the most during the final round was Lexi. She started the day with a one-shot lead, which she quickly lost on the first hole after a poor first tee shot.
