RecruitPKB: 3 Myths about College Recruiting

Between the availability of information through the internet, the demand for scholarship money, and the increase in competition among young golfers, the recruiting process has changed drastically in the past 10 years. After being in the junior golf and college recruiting world as an advisor and consultant for almost 7 years, I wanted to take the time to explain and dispel a few of the myths that are floating around misleading and misguiding junior golf families. Golf Scholarships are Abundant - Golf is a great avenue for a young female to earn scholarship money, but it is not quite what many families anticipate it being. While there are some scholarships that do go unused on the girls side, those are usually at small, rural and lower ranked academic schools. Over the years, it has gotten very competitive among the females for golf scholarship money of any amount. [...]

RecruitPKB: Get Good at Playing Golf not Practicing Golf

My home golf course as a junior golfer didn't have much of a practice facility. You could only hit up to 170yds on the driving range and there was just a small practice green for chipping and putting. When I look back I actually think it was a benefit because I learned how to play golf on the golf course. My dad and I would go out late in the afternoons and spend time practicing on the golf course. This didn't just mean hitting an extra shot here and there or rolling a few putts. We would actually practice on the course. I would learn how to hit shots out of trouble, get up and down around the greens and practice my wedges from inside 100yds. I know many courses may not have the access or allow you to do some of this but if you can [...]

RecruitPKB: Dedicated to the Coaches

A couple of years ago I wrote an article similar to this one but I felt it was time to update it after seeing even more about the life that a college coach leads on a daily basis. No, I don't have personal experience as a college coach, but many of my friends from junior, college and professional golf have all taken on roles as assistants and head coaches at colleges all over the country. I spend a lot of time talking with coaches, walking with them at tournaments and picking their brains. So, while I don't see what they go through first hand on a daily basis, I thought I would try to be their voice to the junior golfers, the parents, and the current collegiate golfers. You won't find many that will complain because they love their job and know the territory that comes with [...]

RecruitPKB: Conference Championships

Over the last few weeks, across the country, teams and individuals battled it out for the title of Conference Champion. Below are the teams, their average score, and the yardage they played from - keep in mind conditions such as wind, cold, elevation and location were all different. RecruitPKB: Coaches Circle

If there is one thing I can't emphasize enough it is that coaches talk to each other. Many of the coaches have known each other since we all started playing junior golf over 20 years ago. The college golf world can be a very small world and while the coaches are competing against each other both on the course and with recruiting, they are still going to talk among themselves. It can certainly be a cut-throat process but for the most part, the coaches have respect for one another and will be honest about the details of particular players recruiting process. There are some exceptions on the coaches end as well where some dishonesty takes place so always make sure you ask the right questions. You don't have to tell a coach every detail about the offers you have from other schools but NEVER lie about it. [...]

RecruitPKB: Time Management

Time management is a recurring topic that many college coaches say their players struggle with on a regular basis. So why not prepare now for that transition. Once you get to college you will have to manage classes, workouts, practice, meetings, laundry, social activities, studying and traveling. It may seem easy to manage your time now, but you won't have your parents there to help keep you on track and there are many more distractions once you get to college. You will be responsible for yourself, your time and your priorities. Your college coach will determine much of your schedule but during the season they are only allowed to schedule 20 hours/week of practice, qualifying, workouts and meetings and 8 hours/week during the off season so you will have to manage your time during the other hours of the day. And most coaches will expect you to put [...]

RecruitPKB: Take the Initiative to Call Coaches

Maybe you have sent out some intro emails but you haven’t gotten any responses, or maybe you have been communicating with some coaches through email but don’t feel like you are getting anywhere? The next step you must be willing to tackle is to pick up the phone and call the coaches. It is very easy to sit behind a computer and send emails, and often times coaches will prefer to communicate that way, but they will all be expecting you to take the initiative to pick up the phone and call them. They want to see that you are willing to make the extra effort to call and speak by phone. This not only shows your seriousness about playing for their program, but it also provides them insight into your communication skills. Coaches are looking for players with maturity, assertiveness and interpersonal skills, so a phone call [...]

RecruitPKB: Learn from Lexi

I hope many of you had the chance to watch the ANA Inspiration this past weekend, if not you missed a great tournament finish with some moments that a young girl could definitely learn a lot from. By now we all know that Lydia Ko is a phenomenal player and her attitude on the course is certainly one to pay attention to and try to mimic, but the player who impressed me the most during the final round was Lexi. She started the day with a one-shot lead, which she quickly lost on the first hole after a poor first tee shot. As any professional golfer knows by now, during a major a 3-4 stroke lead can disappear in a heartbeat so staying patient throughout the day is a must during a major championship. But it was Lexi's composure on the last few holes that really stood [...]

RecruitPKB: Learn to be Excellent

“Success is about having, excellence is about being. Success is about having money and fame, but excellence is being the best you can be.” - Mike Ditka It's so easy to get caught up in the desire to win trophies and awards. They are the external rewards that make athletes feel like their hard work has paid off and they've earned something to show for it. Many times those external rewards are what determine an athlete's success. You hear too often that a professional athlete retires, sustains a career ending injury, gets cut from the team or loses their tour status, just to realize they are left with years of external rewards but no internal ones. They don't know who they are without being successful at their sport. Learning that true excellence comes from within is what will allow a junior golfer the opportunity to use the [...]

RecruitPKB: Learn from Jason Day

This past week on social media I shared a clip from Jason Day's post-round interview after winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Unfortunately, the clip isn't available online anymore but when asked about his win, Jason emphasized 4 main areas that I thought were important to share. He says that his physical training and nutrition are two areas he has really focused on improving recently. He trains hard in the gym and he eats to fuel his body for the grind of competition. Also, he said that he spends 3.5 hours a day working strictly on short game, where he said that he writes everything down in a notebook, as in everything. He tracks the drills that he does, how he performs during those drills and he analyzes his results from one practice to another. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect a junior golfer to have 3.5 hours [...]
