RecruitPKB: Ways to Connect with Coaches

As we continue to navigate this uncertain and unusual time I wanted to share a few ways to connect with the college coaches during this time. While recruiting is somewhat limited and there aren't any tournaments going on coaches are still expecting to hear from recruits. Email and phone updates are still a great way to connect but here are a few additional ideas. Please keep in mind if you are being realistic with the school and program when asking for the coaches time for some of these though. Ask to have a Zoom, Skype or facetime chat if you are a 2020 or 2021 recruit (starting June 15th if you are a 2022 recruit).  Don't wait for the coach to suggest this, take the initiative Engage with them on social media. Comment and like their posts. Tag them on your posts if it's something you [...]

RecruitPKB: How Are You Taking Advantage

How are you taking advantage of your time? Don't feel too overwhelmed to accomplish everything just because you have more time available during this period of social distancing and quarantine. But do take advantage of having the opportunity to focus on things you weren't able to before when school and golf were majority of your days and weekends. This is a great time to start a new project, pick up a hobby, try a new sport, read a book, exercise, or help someone else. Obviously we all need to follow the guidelines in place to protect our health and the health of others, but within what is allowed take advantage of this time. If your golf course is still open set aside practice time and focus during that time. Some days it's ok to go out there and not have a plan, but most days you [...]

RecruitPKB: COVID-19 and its Effect on College Recruiting

As we all are fully aware we are in the midst of a very crazy time in the world. Many people are being affected in much more serious ways than just the outcome of the college recruiting process but I will allow the news to cover all of that information and focus on how this may or may not be affecting you as a student-athlete. First thing, there has been a mandatory DEAD PERIOD put into place until at least April 15th for all DI and DII coaches. This means that a coach can't have in-person contact on or off-campus with a prospective student-athlete and they can not watch a student-athlete compete. Also, NLI signings have been suspended until April 15th as well. Coaches are however ALLOWED to communicate via electronic communication (phone, text, email, social media) during this temporary dead period if you are a [...]

RecruitPKB: Prioritize Your Criteria

While it's rare for even the best players in the country to get everything they want from their college decision, it helps to prioritize your criteria and focus on schools that offer the best opportunity to have access to your higher priority factors. Keep in mind though, if those schools are unrealistic in comparison to your resume then you likely won't get any responses and limit your options. There is a balance between staying open-minded in order to find options that are realistic, while also keeping in mind the aspects that you feel are most important to you. These are some of the more common aspects to consider in determining your college golf experience: 📌Academic demand 📌Golf demand 📌Location 📌Social life 📌Size 📌Scholarship opportunity 📌Coach relationship 📌Intended major 📌Cost 📌Weather 📌Playing time 📌Team chemistry Additional factors: 📌Team diversity 📌Strength of schedule 📌Workout demands 📌Surrounding area 📌Housing These [...]

RecruitPKB: Overcoming Injuries

I was recently asked by a young player about how to overcome injuries during and after season. While I do now suffer from chronic foot pain and post-surgical arthritis and inflammation in both of my feet, I never had any major injuries or illnesses during my actual golf career. So while I have some thoughts and opinions on this and how I manage them in my current training, I wanted to seek out someone who has battled both chronic and acute injuries throughout her career. I sat down in a recent episode of Tap In To College Golf to ask Taylor Totland, former Furman golfer and current Symetra Tour pro, how she has dealt with her injuries. We talk about how to deal with the downtime during the actual injury and not let it get you down in the dumps because you can't compete or practice. She [...]

RecruitPKB: Social Media Series Kickoff

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and ready to make 2020 an awesome year. I was recently at the PKB Junior at Pine Needles where I led a discussion with parents and players about the impact and usage of social media in the recruiting process. Social media has become an integral part of the college recruiting process so it's important to understand how, when, and why to use this as a resource. Since this was such a well-received topic of discussion, over the next several weeks, I want to share more about the areas we covered during that evening. To kick the series off though, I want to open the chance for you to submit questions that you might like addressed or specific scenarios you have faced with the use and impact of social media. Please send those to me at bjackson@pkbgt.org [...]

RecruitPKB: Favorite Putting Drill

One of my favorite putting drills from my college and professional days is something very simple but extremely effective at building confidence and putting a little bit of pressure on making those short putts when it counts. There are several different variations of this one drill which is why I like it so much. Below are a few options to get you started. 3, 5, 7, 9ft line - Place a tee at 3ft, 5ft, 7ft and 9ft in a line on one side of hole. Begin with a fairly flat putt. Start at the 3ft putt, if you make it move back to the 5ft putt, if you make that move to the 7ft. If you miss then you must start back at the 3ft putt 9, 7, 5, 3ft line - After you have gone up the line start from the 9ft putt and move [...]

RecruitPKB: Happy Thanksgiving

I just want to take the time to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving! I am thankful for the opportunity each year to meet many of you and learn more about you and your love for the game of golf. This is such a wonderful game and it's truly a blessing to get to play. I hope you enjoy the time to spend together while eating lots of great food, traveling, watching football, shopping, playing golf, and all the other holiday traditions you have with your family.

RecruitPKB: How to Contact a Coach

Last week I explained why I use the "contact 75+ schools" in all of my tips and checklists. I hope you had a chance to read that because that gets misunderstood quite often based on the situation. So this week I just wanted to provide a little insight into how you can go about contacting those coaches. Keep in mind, this is for initial communication and getting your name out there. It takes organizing your list into the programs you really want to focus on and then doing your best to build a relationship with those coaches. That takes quite a bit of time and effort so you can't expect to do that for all of the schools you may initially contact. Make sure you have a good resume that has all of the necessary information, along with a swing video. (Junior Golf Scoreboard has a [...]
