Recruit PKB: Learn From Others

As a young golfer, you can always learn something from other players, especially ones who have reached a level that you are aiming to reach. You can do this from the comfort of your own home by watching golf on TV. Watch the tour players go through their decision-making process and pre-shot routine. You will hear them assess the situation, pick a club and pick a specific target. Listen to the commentators when they say what clubs the players choose to hit around the greens and really watch how they play the shots. Watch how they handle bad breaks and bad shots. Another great way you can learn from better players is to go watch a collegiate tournament that is close to home. This is a great opportunity to not only watch the players but also the coach. Watch how they interact with each other and how [...]

RecruitPKB: Why Her and Not Me Podcast

I kicked off season 5 of Tap Into College Golf this week with an all-new episode that I wanted to share with you. “Why Her and Not Me?” While you may not say or think those exact words it’s certainly a thought I know many of you have had at some point when you've seen a player post their verbal commitment or learn that they received the offer you were hoping to get from a coach. You may be asking yourself, "What did I do wrong?", "What did she do better?", "What can I do better?". Well in this first episode of season 5 we discuss 6 scenarios I've seen be the reason that a coach selects one recruit over another, and how you can be more aware of these aspects that may impact your chances of getting that college golf offer you've dreamed of. You can [...]

RecruitPKB: Negative Self Talk

Every time you hit a bad shot, have a bad hole, or make a mental mistake stop for a second and ask yourself this question. What would I tell my playing partners if they did the same thing? I highly doubt you would tell them “that was stupid” or “geez what were you thinking” or “you’re terrible”. More than likely you would tell them “it’s OK” or “shake it off” and not really have much emotion towards their shot. You may feel bad for them if they are having a rough day but you would never put them down or belittle their golf skills. So why do that to yourself? Why beat yourself up about a bad shot or mental mistake? Shouldn’t you be as quick to boost your own self up as you would be to do it for somebody else? We can all be our [...]

RecruitPKB: Always Reply to the Coaches

So much of the recruiting process is a parallel between recruits and coaches. It amazes me how many times I hear players get frustrated because a coach never replies back, yet when a coach at a school they're not interested in emails them, they won't reply to them. Yes, the coaches are the adults and have more experience in the recruiting world, but they're human too and get frustrated when they email a player and never get a response.  Just as you would rather at least get a response, even if it's a "not interested" one, so would the coaches. It takes less than 2 minutes to write a polite response. So if a coach sends you an email and you're 100% not interested then just let them know you don't think it's a good fit for what you are looking at with golf and school. If [...]

RecruitPKB: Parents at Tournaments

As summer golf starts to heat up, I wanted to send a quick reminder for the parents while out watching your daughter play golf. One of the first experiences a coach will have when recruiting a player is the interaction that they see between a parent and child at a junior golf tournament. Below are a few tips on ways to ensure your role at a tournament is a positive one for both your daughter and a college coach. Don’t hover when they are warming up:  Try not to hover over your daughter while she is warming up to play. It is ok to watch her hit balls and to be there to assist her if she needs it but don't overdo it. It's a red flag to a coach if a parent dictates everything their daughter does during their warm-up. Let her have space to warm up [...]

RecruitPKB: What is Confidence

"Confidence is the knowledge that I can give my best effort regardless of circumstances" - Ben Bergeron After hearing this definition of confidence on a podcast I listen to it got me thinking about the real meaning of confidence. But what catches my attention in this quote is the use of the word "knowledge". Typically the words faith and belief are used when defining confidence but I believe the use of the word knowledge is what defines true confidence. According to the Merriam-Webster definition of knowledge, it is "the fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience". As opposed to the definition of belief, "something that is accepted or considered to be true or honest" and the definition of faith, "something that is believed especially with strong conviction".  Having faith and belief in yourself are almost these vague words to give you the [...]

RecruitPKB: I Feel Your Pain

For those that may not know, I moved on from playing professional golf back in 2010 after giving it a go for 8 years. It's hard for many people to believe how little golf I play these days after over 20 years of playing competitively. I shared this story several years but it popped back up on my feed recently so I thought I would share it again with a few updates. I was asked to play in a 27 hole 2 person team tournament for a big charity here in the upstate of SC. I was paired up with Ali Rogers, 2012 Miss SC, and 2013 Miss America Runner Up. She had played a little high school golf but was a big softball player. The format was 9 hole best ball and 9 hole captains' choice before going in for lunch to be re-flighted and re-paired [...]

RecruitPKB: More Than Your Score

"MORE THAN YOUR SCORE" Never forget that you are better, bigger, brighter, and bolder than your score. Your score is just.... a number. a tally of golf shots. a total of drives, GIRs, up and downs, and putts. You are the sum of... all the hard work, dedication, and commitment to getting better all the hours practicing by yourself all the late nights studying all the effort in the gym all the putting drills till dark all the range balls till your hands hurt all the tournaments, practice rounds, long car drives, and weather delays all the wins and losses all the friends made You are more than your score   If you need any assistance please contact Recruit PKB College Recruiting Consultant Brandi Jackson at bjackson@pkbgt.org.

RecruitPKB: 50 or More Initial Emails

I recently had a discussion about the number of schools a recruit should contact. Typically when a player shows me a list of 20-30 schools, the majority, if not all of them are unrealistic for the given recruiting timeline. While I am an advocate for having big goals that you have to work hard to achieve and reaching out to some dream schools, you have to be cautious about what percentage of dream schools vs realistic schools you have on your list. This not only leads to a lack of coach responses and interest, but it also creates a lot of anxiety and a decrease in confidence. In my recruiting content, I always say to contact 50+ schools but as with most parts of this process that is dependent on many factors. The reason I use that number is for the average player who is doing this [...]
