RecruitPKB: Find Your WHY

Motivation can be tough at times for athletes of all levels. You can get tired, burned out, frustrated or simply just lose focus. To help make sure you stay motivated everyday take the time to figure out your "why". Why do you play golf? Why do you practice? Why do you play tournaments? There isn't necessarily a right or wrong reason but everybody needs to know their why. For some athletes it's more of an internal reason such as the competitiveness, for others it's for an external reason or reward such as a golf scholarship. Take some time to think about yourself and your golf game and figure out your own personal "why". Make sure that its yours and not your parents or your friends. It has to be a reason that means something to you and makes you wake up everyday and want to get better. Write it on your bathroom mirror [...]

RecruitPKB: National Letter of Intent

I posted last week that I would have a blog about verbal commitments this week, but I wanted to post the definition of an NLI first so that you have that understanding. Next week though will be a comparison of the two and what they each mean in the recruiting process.

RecruitPKB: Questions to Ask Yourself

As many players begin to make their final college decision I wanted to address some questions that are very important to ask yourself to ensure you find the right fit. It's really easy to get wrapped up in the glitz and glamor that you are shown on your campus visit. College recruiting is a business so the school and coach are going to pitch themselves to you just as a sales person would pitch their product or services. It's a decision that will affect the rest of your life, so make sure you look past the "sales pitch" and decide if it's the right place for you to spend the next 4 years of your life. Are you compatible with the coach and other team members? How does the coach interact with the players? How much will you be expected to practice/play each week? How does the [...]

RecruitPKB: 12 Habits of a Successful Jr Golfer

There are a lot of qualities and characteristics that a junior golfer needs to possess beyond their golf scores in order to be successful both on and off the golf course. These are 12 that I consider to be the most important ones: You are coachable - You are willing to listen, try, and change how you do things in order to get better You set goals - You have goals and dreams that make you excited to get up and work hard every day You learn from others - You understand that there is a lot to learn from others who have more experience than you do You use your resources - You utilize all of the tools, people, and education that is available to you in order to get better and make good decisions You plan and prepare - You don’t show up and go [...]

RecruitPKB: Love Yourself

As I am sure everyone was aware, this past week was all about LOVE! And while Valentine's Day is more about showing your love to others, I wanted to take the chance to remind you about the importance of loving yourself but also possessing the willingness to become a better version of who you are.  There is no doubt that you have to love who you are, some days may be harder than others to do this, but you must find the power to still love who you are at the end of the day. With that being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to be a better version of who YOU are and what you want with your life. It should actually be a priority!!   Maturity and discipline are two things I have always struggled with in my life, not that there is anything [...]

RecruitPKB: Dress the Part

Through my 28+ years of playing golf, I have certainly seen golf fashion change drastically over time, especially for females. As junior golfers, we did not have many options for cute clothing on the golf course. I can remember wearing long Duck Head shorts and baggy collared shirts for most of my childhood. I will admit that I was quite the tomboy growing up but the options were still very limited to look cute and trendy on the golf course. Even in college, golf skirts/skorts were just becoming a fashion trend. Obviously, times have changed and so has fashion on the golf course. From a college recruiting perspective, how you dress on the golf course can play a factor in whether a coach recruits you or not. It would be one of the small factors, but it is still something to be aware of as you proceed [...]

RecruitPKB: Are Scholarships Negotiable?

I was asked this question last week about whether or not scholarships are negotiable so I thought it was a good topic to address to those who may be curious about this question. I have faced it numerous times working with families as they make their final decision and it can certainly be a sensitive subject on both sides of the equation. Many instances of dishonesty have occurred, but if handled correctly, it can be a beneficial experience for both the family and the coach. The ultimate answer to the question is that "yes" athletic scholarships can be negotiable if a full ride is not offered, however, as with many parts of the recruiting process it does depend on the situation. There are some cases where the amount of money being offered is truly the maximum amount that a coach has available for you. All of their [...]

RecruitPKB: Bring on 2017

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, holiday season, and a Happy New Year. I know I sure did! I was able to spend a lot of time with my families and friends, ate way too much good food and relaxed a bit as the year came to a close. I am really excited about 2017 and what is in store for PKBGT and RecruitPKB.   As we kick this year off, I wanted to give the opportunity for you to send me some questions and thoughts on topics you would like for me to cover in my articles, webinars, and seminars. These can be specific to college recruiting or more general in regards to player development, junior golf, female athletes, etc. You can email your thoughts and questions to me at bjackson@pkbgt.org. Right now, we are working on updating our RecruitPKB packages for this year to [...]
