RecruitPKB: Q and A with Lee University Coach

RecruitPKB College Consultant Brandi Jackson recently conducted Q and As with college coaches at all division levels across the country. Here is some insight from Coach John Maupin, head women's golf coach at top 20 ranked DII Lee University.   Do you prefer that a recruit fills out the online questionnaire or sends their resume? Or both? We prefer to receive their resume, it is much more likely to get our attention in a timely manner that way.   What do you look for when observing a recruit on the course? Very rarely are we looking for a specific result when observing a recruit on the course. We already typically have a good idea of their average score, so we are trying to observe the intangibles. How do they prepare for their round? How do they react when something goes wrong? Do they communicate/rely on their parents for [...]

RecruitPKB: Is It Too Early?

After giving up my professional golf career in 2010, I started working with junior golf families throughout the college recruiting process. I was speaking at high schools and tournaments all across the country about the realities of college recruiting and how to navigate the process. This was the first time I had become aware of how much the process had changed since I had gone through it as a junior golfer. One of the biggest eye openers for me was how early the process starts (and ends) and how unaware some families were about what it takes to play at the college level. I am a huge believer in keeping the game fun and not putting too much pressure on a young player. Nowadays there seems to be a lot more responsibility put on kids and more specialization of sports at a young age. I couldn’t imagine [...]

RecruitPKB: Merry Christmas

I just wanted to take this time to say a very Merry Christmas to all of the PKB Girls Tour members and their families. This is such a wonderful time to spend with family and friends. I hope you are enjoying the holiday season as much as I am. Safe travels to all of you who are on the roads this time of year.

RecruitPKB: Growth or Fixed Mindset?

How do you handle adversity, challenges, and setbacks? With a fixed mindset or a growth mindset? One of my favorite and most influential books is Carol Dweck's Mindset. She has conducted numerous studies and research on the difference in those who possess a fixed mindset and those who have a growth mindset. This past weekend I had the opportunity to sit down with a top 50 ranked DI college golf coach to discuss plans for one of my players who would be playing there. We wanted to create some steps and goals to help this player be more prepared for when she stepped foot on campus in the fall. A lot of our discussion centered around mindset and creating more of a growth mindset when it comes to challenges and getting better at all areas of golf and life. I thought I would share a little insight into to [...]

Recruit PKB: Do Your Research

"I always appreciate it when a recruit has done a little research on college golf, and my team in particular." - Emily Kuhfeld,  GA Southern Women's Head Coach Part of the recruiting process is to learn more about the school, coach, and golf program as you communicate with a college coach, but do as much initial research as you can. You can learn a lot thru the resources that are available online such as the school and team website, PING College Guide, CollegeBoard.com, Golfstat.com, Golfweek.com, and social media. Also doing your research on the NCAA rules will show a coach that you’re serious about this process and understand what can and can’t happen at different stages. This will help you not make mistakes or misunderstand why a coach may not be responding to your emails or phone calls.   If you do the research you will be much more prepared for [...]

RecruitPKB: I Didn’t Sign, Now What?

I know it may feel like everyone else signed their NLI last week but don't worry! There are still opportunities out there and coaches who need players. You can still find an opportunity to play college golf and sign during the regular signing period in April if you put some work into the process. Keep a good schedule of tournaments lined up throughout the fall, winter, and spring. Let the coaches know where you will be playing. Focus mostly on DII, DIII, NAIA and JuCo schools, as most DI programs will have finished their recruiting. There are still some DI coaches looking for players into the spring of senior year, but it's a more rare occurrence so don't put many eggs in that basket. Try to consider some colder areas of the country as those programs tend to fill up their roster later. The better academic schools usually [...]

RecruitPKB: Don’t Panic but Be Proactive

"Just wanted to let you know that for 2020 we have one verbal commitment and another offer out.  Assuming that gets accepted we would only have walk-on opportunities available for 2020." - Top 25 Ranked DI Women's Golf Program In consulting my 2020 recruits, I have received several responses like this from coaches who are already wrapping up their 2020 recruiting class, during the fall of a recruit's sophomore year.  I know it's hard to believe and part of me doesn't like to share this because I know it makes players panic and stresses them out. But I have also seen the lack of knowledge and understanding of the reality of the recruiting process and they find out this information too late. Thankfully on a positive note, I have also had several 2018 recruits, current seniors, who have just wrapped up their recruiting process by making their decision in [...]

RecruitPKB: College Golf is an Experience Unlike Any Other

Although many of you may be years away from heading off to college, I wanted to share some insight into what makes the experience of college golf so awesome! - ♦️ Playing college golf is a privilege - Yes, you earned it thru hard work and dedication as a junior golfer, but it's still not something you're "entitled" to, it is an opportunity provided to you that comes with a lot of responsibility and respect! Do not EVER take that for granted!!   ♦️ Be a good teammate - Many aspects of college golf are still very individual but remember that you're part of a team. Support and cheer for your teammates, help them out any way you can, don't stir up team drama and embrace their unique qualities and different backgrounds. On our team in college, we had players from MN, PA, CT, SC, GA, IL and RI. [...]

RecruitPKB: College Coach Wisdom

"All around good in every area. Over-achieve in academics, golf, life and community service. Be a role model." - Division 1 Women's Golf Coach While at times it may feel hard to do it all, especially as a high school athlete, do your best to overachieve in as many areas as you can. Manage your time wisely so that you can commit yourself to activities that don't all revolve around just playing golf. It's ok to take a little time away especially when it means you are doing some community service work to help others or focusing on your academics for an upcoming exam or test. While being an elite level golfer requires a lot of time and dedication, when you keep your life well rounded it helps you keep everything in perspective better.

RecruitPKB: I am Proud of Who I am

I am usually posting about college recruiting and complete player content here on the ReruitPKB blog but I wrote this post last week on my personal and BJGolf social media and it really seemed to hit home with a lot of people. I thought I would share here as well in case there is a young girl out there going through some of the same things I did as a high school and college golfer. When I was in high school, my insecurities made me easily influenced and naive. - When I was in college, my insecurities made me guarded and immature. - When I was on tour, my insecurities made me easily intimidated and anxious. - After my tour days, my insecurities made me uncertain and unsettled on who I was without being a golfer. - And now I realize that my insecurities have simply made [...]
