RecruitPKB: Is Social Media Necessary in Recruiting

For most people, social media has become a way of life. It's how we get our news, stay in touch with friends and family, shop, build a business, and much more. And in the recruiting process, it's a way to help maximize your efforts for finding a college golf home. In the next few articles we will cover the ways to use social media and the ways not to use social media as a prospective student athlete. But first, I want to address the question, is it necessary? No, it's not necessary, because in this world of too much screentime, oversharing, and inappropriate content I want to make sure no one feels like they have to use social media. If you aren't comfortable as a kid or young adult (or as the parent of a kid or young adult) using social media, then do not feel [...]

RecruitPKB: What Freshmen and Sophomores Need to Know

Freshmen and sophomores..... are you wondering what you should be doing now that the NCAA rules prevent you from communicating with college coaches and taking visits? While the purpose of the revised NCAA rules was to limit the communication between coach and player so that early commitments could not happen and allow players more time to develop, this doesn't mean you can just sit back and wait. There are still many things you need to be doing before that date: Create a resume and video Introduce yourself to coaches via email Keep them updated on your progress and schedule Show your interest in the program Attend the right camps and showcases Take academic tours Play the right tournaments for your goals Develop your game and practice habits Improve the "intangibles" Begin a workout and nutrition regimen After 6 months of the process taking shape, we are seeing that [...]

RecruitPKB: Parents Being Awesome

I can not imagine where I would be today without the support of my parents. Yes, there are some parents out there of junior girls who need to look deep into how they behave and treat their daughters when it comes to their golf games. It breaks my heart sometimes to hear how girls feel because a parent has pushed them to a point of being so unhappy on the golf course so that was a big reason in starting this series. But so many of you are doing your best and having to learn as you go. I know its tough to want to see your daughter succeed and do well on the golf course but to have to watch her struggle. You have the ability to see years down the road and understand what this game and all of the experiences, opportunities, and growth [...]

RecruitPKB: College Golf Qualifying

Let’s talk about qualifying once you get to college. Right now you’re seeing a lot of programs posting about team qualifying going on as their fall season continues. So how is qualifying handled? A general rule of thumb is that players will compete in a series of qualifying rounds, usually at a few different area courses, to earn a spot in the lineup for the first tournament. Ex: Players will play 5 rounds, the 3 lowest total scores will qualify for 3 spots and the coach has two picks. There are some cases that once a coach gets a lineup then they stick with those 5 players all fall season but usually players will have opportunities to earn their way on to the travel team throughout the season. Typically certain criteria are set to allow players in the tourney to earn their spot at the next [...]

RecruitPKB: Post-Round Conversations

I recently started a series through my newsletter called "My Two Cents" to share some advice and insight with parents of junior girls. This purpose is to share "my two cents" as having experienced being the daughter and golfer, but not being a parent myself. I have, however, spent 10 years consulting players and parents through their experience of playing junior golf, going through the college recruiting process, and as collegiate athletes, so I feel like I've witnessed a wide array of family dynamics to have a unique perspective. The car rides back home or to the hotel after a rough day on the golf course is dreaded by nearly every junior golfer to ever play the game. Even if you are the positive “keep your head up” type of parent or not one to get involved with your daughter’s golf game, it can still be [...]

RecruitPKB: What I was surprised to learn through college golf

Recent Mercer University grad and golf alum, Jaelyn Tindal, shares her thoughts on what she was surprised to learn throughout her college golf experience. Jaelyn has also joined the Brandi Jackson Golf and RecruitPKB team as we continue to strive to provide education and guidance to the girls who are seeking to find their right college golf fit. As everyone knows, college is a time centered around personal growth and tremendous potential for learning. The entire experience presents a “sink or swim” opportunity for students to figure things out. Playing collegiate golf intensifies the need to learn, not only about the game, but also about one’s self. Beyond the standard lessons learned in college, such as how to manage time, improve study habits, or make responsible decisions, I was lucky to have learned so much more through my collegiate experience. “Fair is a place where pigs win [...]

RecruitPKB: Myth 3: I am open to all opportunities to play college golf

Many players will say “yes I’m open to anywhere, I just want to play college golf.” But in reality, when it comes down to it they are often very picky about the factors they want and don’t want in choosing a school. Don’t get me wrong that is part of going thru this process is to figure those things out and find a school that fits you best. But when you take into account enrollment, academics, location, cost, team ranking, majors, and other factors a recruit can quickly go from “anywhere” to “nowhere”. It is certainly understandable and commendable to have certain criteria and expectations with your education. Many of you have worked extremely hard to earn good grades and accolades so don't feel pressured to sacrifice that if that is an important factor for your decision. Just keep in mind when it comes to recruiting the [...]

RecruitPKB: Setting Realistic Goals and Dreams

I find myself very conflicted on the motto of "Dream Big" but also understanding in a setting like college recruiting what it can lead to through the process if you aren't realistic in your dreams and goals. If you have such a high standard for where you want to play college golf but physically, mentally, or maturity wise you aren't able to reach that dream, then you will end up feeling like the opportunities you have aren't good enough or you won't even give yourself the chance to find opportunities that will allow you to succeed in college golf. Yes, I hope you all have big dreams! Whether it's golf related, or your academics, or your future career, whatever it is - DREAM BIG! As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago I had a BIG dream when I was just 8 or 9 years old that I wanted [...]

RecruitPKB: Setting Specific Goals and Dreams

While some goals and dreams are going to be general, do your best to keep them as specific as you can. This may mean that you need to readjust as you get closer to reaching your goal or dream to make it more specific to your current progress. As I mentioned the other week, I had a dream when I was 8 or 9 years old to play on the LPGA Tour, and while then it was obviously understandable at that age to not be very specific about that dream, as I got older I never readjusted to set a more specific dream. I technically did live out my dream to "play" on the LPGA Tour so I can't be mad at 8-year-old Brandi, but what might have happened if I had set my dream to finish top 10 in a tournament, or maybe even win an [...]

RecruitPKB: Long Term vs Short Term vs Process Goals

Last week I talked about the importance of knowing the "why" behind your goals and now this week I want to talk about the difference between long term, short term, and process goals. All three are important but knowing the difference and which ones to focus on can be the difference in achieving them or not. Goals are normally thought of as future achievements. They are dreams and wishes for something you want to happen in the future. By the time I was 9 years old, I already had my long-term goal (or dream) - to play on the LPGA Tour. That is all I wanted to do. I never made a backup plan, never thought about another profession or career. Not long after that, I set another shorter, but still, long-term goal, to play at Furman University. Because of the legacy of the Furman Women's Golf program, I knew it [...]
