It’s been awhile since I’ve addressed some of the basic steps of the process but for those of you just getting started I wanted to do a basic rundown of the steps:

  1. Get an Evaluation from a qualified 3rd party who understands junior girls golf, women’s college golf, and the girls recruiting process. There is a lot of information out there and many times it can be misleading or misunderstood. The process is very specific to each individual player so it is extremely helpful to get started by knowing how the process matches up to each player’s own goals and expectations
  2. Understand the NCAA rules so that you know when and what you can do. There have been some major changes in the recruiting process over the last 2 years that affect both players and coaches. Know what is allowed and how you need to still be proactive.
  3. Build a Resume that a college coach can easily access and get all of the important information they need to see. This can be online via a personal page or using a resume service such as the one that Junior Golf Scoreboard offers, or you can do a simple document/pdf.
  4. Create a Recruiting Video to allow a coach to physically see you, your swing and your short game. It needs to be the correct angles, no unnecessary footage, good sound quality, and easily accessible for the coach.
  5. Research Schools and Golf Programs to understand what it takes to compete at different programs and what the school offers. Take some notes as you go and begin to create a list of schools to contact. Have some dream schools but try to focus mostly on what is realistic.
  6. Contact Coaches via intro emails and phone calls (if NCAA rules allow). You need a well-written (not by a parent) intro email that specifically states your interest in the school and program, along with some insight about you as a student, golfer, and person. Include your resume and video. Try to schedule time to chat via phone/video so you can get to know the coach better and ask questions.
  7. Schedule and Take Visits (based on NCAA rules) so that you can meet with the coaches and get a chance to see if it’s going to be a good fit. Schedule an academic tour.
  8. Make Your Decision based on the reasons that are important to you. Consider all options and take your time to find the right fit for you.
