RecruitPKB: Etiquette on Visits

Many junior golfers have been taking advantage of the summer months by scheduling unofficial visits with college coaches. This is a great time to catch a coach in their office or visit a campus while you are out traveling for tournaments. Below are a few things for both junior golfers and their parents to keep in mind. For junior golfers: Leave your cell phone in the car. To keep you from even being tempted to check your phone during the visit it is best to just leave it in the car. Look the coach in the eye and firmly shake their hand when you walk into their office. Sit up straight in the chair. Don't slouch and slump. Be enthusiastic. These days pin sheets are almost a thing of the past. Tour players must rely on them because they can only use range finders during practice rounds. Many junior golfers admit that they don't even know how to read a pin sheet. While you can find out the exact yardage to the pin with a range finder there is a lot you can't learn that could affect club and shot selection. So take the time to learn how to read a pin sheet.           During the PKB Open Championships, we hosted a Recruit PKB College Coach Panel where the ECU, UNCW, UNCG, Western Carolina, UNC-Pembroke and Catawba coaches all participated. My home golf course as a junior golfer didn't have much of a practice facility. You could only hit up to 170yds on the driving range and there was just a small practice green for chipping and putting. When I look back I actually think it was a benefit because I learned how to play golf on the golf course. My dad and I would go out late in the afternoons and spend time practicing on the golf course. This didn't just mean hitting an extra shot here and there or rolling a few putts. A couple of years ago I wrote an article similar to this one but I felt it was time to update it after seeing even more about the life that a college coach leads on a daily basis. No, I don't have personal experience as a college coach, but many of my friends from junior, college and professional golf have all taken on roles as assistants and head coaches at colleges all over the country.
