RecruitPKB: Being Thankful and Gracious
"Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation". - Brian Tracy Being thankful and gracious are two topics that I catch myself emphasizing over and over again in my articles, evaluations and seminars but it simply can not be said enough, especially in today's world. While you may not think about the importance of these when it comes to college recruiting, they really can set you apart from so many others who don't take the time to be thankful or gracious. And not only in regards to college recruiting, they simply teach you two qualities that are so important in the world today and can even help to improve your mental state on the golf course. With Thanksgiving coming up, take the time to tell those in your life thank you for what they do for you. Parents, coaches, instructors, teachers [...]
RecruitPKB: National Letter of Intent
https://youtu.be/zXcZeknDdQ0 Signing the NLI (National Letter of Intent) is a big step in the recruiting process. There are a few things you need to be aware of before you sign your NLI. Keep in mind the NLI is an agreement between the student athlete and the institution, not with the coach. So if a coach leaves you are still obligated to attend the institution unless you are granted a release. The NLI is an agreement that you are receiving athletic scholarship. If you are only receiving academic scholarship or paying your own tuition then you cannot sign the NLI. NLI's are only signed once with an institution. You will be notified annually if your athletic aid is being renewed, unless extenuating circumstances occur your aid will be renewed or possibly increased. All other institutions are obligated to cease recruitment of an athlete once the NLI is signed and the athlete should notify all other institutions of their decision. Signing your NLI does [...]
RecruitPKB: Making Your College Decision Part 2
As we near the NCAA’s Early Signing Period (November 11-18, 2015), there will be seniors from all over the world making their final decision on where they will play their college golf. The majority have already made a verbal commitment, in some cases as early as their freshman or sophomore year, and will now make it official by signing their NLI (National Letter of Intent). It’s the moment every young golfer dreams about from the time they play their first tournament, well that and maybe making the winning putt to win The Masters or the US Women’s Open. It’s their day to announce to the world where they have officially committed to play college golf. They wear their future college colors, and while surrounded by their parents and coaches, they have their picture taken as they sign their NLI. Don’t get me wrong, every young golfer should be thrilled and excited for this day in their junior golf career, it’s a huge accomplishment, but many [...]
RecruitPKB: Making Your College Decision Part 1
Part 1 of Making Your College Decision comes straight from the thoughts and opinions of college coaches. Keep in mind, each individual coach has their own recruiting style and they look for different qualities in a player that fits their coaching style so some answers may not apply to your current situation. But as you read through the quotes you will begin to see some similarities that should help you as you make your final college decision. From a coach's perspective, what are some factors to help a junior golfer determine the right fit? "Do they like the school, the coach and the team? Does the school have the correct major for the student. It is important to establish a relationship with the coach and to know the students on the team. The student must be qualified academically. The student has to have a solid tournament record." - Division 1 Women's Golf Coach "Does the school have my major field of study? How many [...]
RecruitPKB: Scheduling Visits
A very important, proactive step in the college recruiting process is to schedule unofficial visits as early as possible. The days of official visits are almost over now that recruiting starts so early. Official visits aren't allowed until first day of your senior year, if you wait until then to take visits it will be too late. They tend to just be a formality for players who have already verbally committed and are getting ready to sign their NLI. You can always take unofficial visits until that time though. You must be assertive and take the initiative to try and set up visits early in the process. Visits will not only give you an opportunity to meet with a coach and get comfortable with the process, but they also help you begin to figure out what you want in a school. They help to motivate you to work hard in order to reach the level it takes to play at those particular schools [...]
RecruitPKB: 6 Ways to be More Coachable
"A proverb says that 'Only stupid men learn from experience. Wise men learn from other people’s experience'." I got this from an article written by August Turak about coachability on Forbes.com - http://www.forbes.com/sites/augustturak/2011/09/30/are-you-coachable-the-five-steps-to-coachability/ One of the number one qualities that a coach looks for in a player is coachability. They want to know that a player is going to be willing to listen, learn, practice and put into play what they teach them. This is one reason you need to do your research on the coach, their background and their coaching style. If you don't respect a coach's principles then you will never allow them to coach you to your potential. You must have faith in your coach because many times it will get worse before it gets better. so you have to trust they are doing what is best for you. You will miss out on so many opportunities to learn and improve over 4 years of college golf if you aren't willing to [...]
RecruitPKB: Watch and Learn
As a junior golfer you can always learn something from other players, especially ones who have reached a level that you are aiming to reach. This past week was a great example of learning from the best, and you could have done it all from the comfort of your own home. If you are a young female golfer and you didn't catch any of the Solheim Cup, you really missed a huge opportunity to learn and get inspired. I know it had me glued to the TV all weekend, especially Sunday morning as the US team mounted one of the biggest come backs in golf history. It was so exciting to watch it all unfold. Having had the honor to play with most of the girls from the US team and several of the Europe team members, I enjoyed every minute of watching them battle it out for their country and work together as a team. If you didn't get a chance to watch [...]
RecruitPKB Perform: Eat and Drink for Less
This article is part of guest series to the RecruitPKB "Complete Golfer" program by Chris Finn, owner of Par4Success in Cary, North Carolina. --- What I would like you to do is create a short mental checklist of what you will do when preparing for your next tournament. If it is anything like most of the juniors I work with it will probably look something like this: Go play a practice round Practice hard the week leading up to the tournament focused on the type of shots I may need or specific clubs I will need to hit more than others based off my practice round. Map out the round including what clubs to hit off what tees, green slopes, etc. If it is away from home, make sure you have balls, all your clubs, outfits for each day, etc. Three things are never mentioned whenever I ask this question, however. I plan my workout schedule accordingly so I am physically ready to perform I make sure [...]

RecruitPKB: Keep a Journal
This past week I read a great blog written by the Georgia Southern Women's Golf Coach about journaling. Check it out here. While I am not quite part of the techie generation where everything is done on a phone or computer, I do rely on technology for a lot of my business and personal life. However, I have always been a big believer in writing things down. I've never been one to keep a daily journal or diary, but I do constantly have a notebook or notepad to jot down ideas and thoughts and will occasionally give in to writing in my phone notepad if one isn't available. I believe that writing things down holds another level of accountability and retention. It is a great way to set goals, keep track of progress and provide an outlet for your thoughts and feelings. I think what Coach Kuhfield states is very true, "it (journaling) is a habit many successful people share for many great reasons. If [...]
