RecruitPKB: Advice for a 2019 Recruit

In case you missed it this past week I took over the PKBGT Instagram for a Live Q and A to answer questions from players and parents. We had an awesome turnout and a LOT of questions. One question that stood out to me gave me an idea of some topics over the next few weeks. I was asked my biggest piece of advice for a 2021 recruit. While only giving one piece of advice would certainly not do anyone justice I did want to start from there and highlight a few top pieces of advice for each recruiting class. Obviously, even within the same recruiting class, girls can be at very different stages of the process but for the next few weeks I will be addressing those girls who are still trying to find a college golf fit and try to keep it broad enough for the different stages those girls might be at in the process. I will finish out this series [...]

RecruitPKB: How do I Contact the Coaches?

Last week I explained why I use the "contact 75+ schools" in all of my tips and checklists. I hope you had a chance to read that because that gets misunderstood quite often based on the situation. So this week I just wanted to provide a little insight into how you can go about contacting those coaches. Keep in mind, this is for initial communication and getting your name out there. It takes organizing your list into the programs you really want to focus on and then doing your best to build a relationship with those coaches. That takes quite a bit of time and effort so you can't expect to do that for all of the schools you may initially contact. Make sure you have a good resume that has all of the necessary information, along with a swing video. (Junior Golf Scoreboard has a great template for using their an online resume service.) If you are not a junior yet then [...]

PerformPKB: Golf Fitness Online-Does It Work and Is It Safe for Juniors?

How do you know if an online fitness program is any good? What is the difference from one to another? Are there different types of online fitness programs? Everywhere you look there is a new app or program to train remotely on your own, even programs specific for golf!  Technology and the internet have created an ecosystem where you can learn from trainers and coaches on the other side of the planet, it is pretty remarkable. That being said, there are some distinct differences in the categories of virtual fitness programs out there that every parent and golfer need to be acutely aware of as you assess your options.  Basically, you can break them down into 3 categories; stock programs, custom programs, and “betweeners.” The rest of this article will help to outline the landscape of online training and help you to decide what type might be best for you.  We will also discuss safety concerns with each type of training, specifically for junior golfers. Stock [...]

PerformPKB: Balance Hurts Swing Speed in Junior Golfers

Should you be working on balance in the gym? Does it even matter for junior golfers?   Balance is just a problem that senior golfers have, right? Hmmmm... We all know that it takes a combination of the upper body and lower body coordinating together to have an effective golf swing. However, one aspect often overlooked in golf is how we transfer from the right to the left (in a right-handed golfer, reverse for a lefty) from downswing to follow through. Did you know that there is a distinct limitation in how fast your body will let you go if it is not confident you will be able to balance or stabilize on the lead side?  Think of it as a governor on a golf cart. No matter how much you floor the pedal, the cart is only going to go as fast as it is programmed to go. Your body is no different. If your balance is poor, your body will not be [...]

PerformPKB: Top Three Exercises Junior Golfers Do Wrong

There are so many exercises that a junior golfer can choose from when designing their workouts that it is overwhelming. Just of all the exercises, in the past year, that have been demonstrated in magazines, on television and, of course, on YouTube and anywhere else you consume your social media. The crazy thing is that these outlets probably don’t even combine to create an exhaustive list! So how, you may be wondering, from all those options could there possibly only be three exercises that junior golfers do wrong most often? The answer is multifaceted. First, junior golfers as a whole are not told “why” the exercises being done are useful. Many of us just pick out what the latest exercise we saw the newest world number one doing and assume that if it is good for them, it is good for us. Second, golfers often are not given a solid explanation of how they should correctly be doing the exercises they select. This is [...]

RecruitPKB: What I was surprised to learn through college golf

Recent Mercer University grad and golf alum, Jaelyn Tindal, shares her thoughts on what she was surprised to learn throughout her college golf experience. Jaelyn has also joined the Brandi Jackson Golf and RecruitPKB team as we continue to strive to provide education and guidance to the girls who are seeking to find their right college golf fit. As everyone knows, college is a time centered around personal growth and tremendous potential for learning. The entire experience presents a “sink or swim” opportunity for students to figure things out. Playing collegiate golf intensifies the need to learn, not only about the game, but also about one’s self. Beyond the standard lessons learned in college, such as how to manage time, improve study habits, or make responsible decisions, I was lucky to have learned so much more through my collegiate experience. “Fair is a place where pigs win ribbons” is an expression I heard but never appreciated until I played college golf. The gist of [...]

RecruitPKB: Myth 5: There is plenty of scholarship money

Ok, so it's the myth of all myths in the college recruiting world, especially when it comes to women's scholarships. We have all seen the article floating around that there are hundreds of women's golf scholarships that go unused every year and there is so much money available for a girl who can play golf. After working in the college recruiting world for over 9 years now, I can attest to there definitely being truth behind that because I receive numerous messages from coaches that they still have scholarship money for girls as they near the end of that recruiting year (I received 3 just this past week). However, and a big HOWEVER, is that many times these programs with the scholarship money available aren't always the programs that the girls want for their college experience. They tend to be small/rural schools, or schools with lower ranked academics, or schools that may have some scholarship money but are still very expensive. While a young female [...]

RecruitPKB: Myth 4: I Can Beat Those Players

Probably one of the comments I receive most often from players and parents is “I can beat those players” when they look at the team’s roster and results. They see that some of the players have scores and averages that are higher than what they as a junior golfer are currently shooting. And while that is certainly the case many times and it will help you determine if the program is realistic or not, there are some factors to consider that make it not quite as easy to judge as you might think. There are many reasons why junior golf and college scores are not easily compared. 📌 Courses are longer 📌 Courses are tougher 📌 Tourneys are played in tougher weather during fall and spring 📌 You are competing against all new players who are all really good 📌 You have the added pressure of the team and coaches on you 📌 You are playing mostly 54 hole tourneys, some days with 36 [...]

RecruitPKB: Lets Make 2019 Awesome

I hope you are having a wonderful holiday break so far. With the new year brings up the plans for everyone to set goals or make resolutions. While it's important to do that as well (and not just at the start of the year), I have been picking a word as my "word of the year" for the last few years. This past year my word was "create" which many times throughout the year I reminded myself of why I picked this word and how it related to my decisions and mindset in all areas of my life. This year my word is "focus". It came to me on my drive here to Pine Needles and to be honest I am not loving it but I just feel that it came to me for a reason so I am going to spend 2019 figuring out why. What is your word for 2019? What is something you need to remind yourself of throughout the year, [...]
