Recruit PKB: College Golf Wraps Up

This week wraps up the college golf season for the women. I hope you all took the time to follow the results and maybe even watched the coverage on the Golf Channel of the DI National Championships. If you didn't keep up here are some highlights from what took place over the past week. One of the best ways to connect with a college coach is to keep up with what the team has going on. You can follow their social media and keep track through Golfweek and Golfstat. So for a little insight here is what has been happening in the college golf world. Barry University took home the women's DII National Championship by just a single stroke margin over Dallas Baptist University. The Barry team carded a 4 day total of 1,222 which is a team average of 76.375. After a rough few days of weather in the Chicago area, the DI Women's National Championship was able to declare its winner. Arizona [...]

RecruitPKB: Post Season Play Continues

Two weeks ago I wrote about some of the highlights from the collegiate post-season action. This week and next will finish out the rest of the championships so I just wanted to make sure you stay in the loop on what is happening in the college golf world. One of the best ways to connect with a college coach is to keep up with what the team has going on. You can follow their social media and keep track through Golfweek and Golfstat. So for a little insight here is what has been happening in the college golf world. Rhodes College won back to back DIII NCAA National Championship titles last week after coming back from a deficit heading into the final round. They had 4 day totals of 301-300-306-310 leading to an average team score of 76.1 Christina Herbert from Bridgewater University won the DIII National Championship individual title with rounds of 74-69-76-74 You can find the live scoring for the DI, DII, [...]

RecruitPKB: Find Your WHY

Motivation can be tough at times for athletes of all levels. You can get tired, burned out, frustrated or simply just lose focus. To help make sure you stay motivated everyday take the time to figure out your "why". Why do you play golf? Why do you practice? Why do you play tournaments? There isn't necessarily a right or wrong reason but everybody needs to know their why. For some athletes it's more of an internal reason such as the competitiveness, for others it's for an external reason or reward such as a golf scholarship. Take some time to think about yourself and your golf game and figure out your own personal "why". Make sure that its yours and not your parents or your friends. It has to be a reason that means something to you and makes you wake up everyday and want to get better. Write it on your bathroom mirror or make it your phone's background, somewhere that you will see it every morning. Hopefully on days that [...]

RecruitPKB: 6 Things to do Before the 1st Tee

Many times you may get to the first tee of a tournament round and be nervous and anxious to play. The last thing you want to worry about are the tedious things you could have done before you stepped onto the first tee. Here are 6 key tasks to remember to do before you get to the first tee so that you don’t forget and try to do them when you should be focused on starting your round. Clean your clubs - This can be done on the range after you have warmed up. Always start your round with a nice clean set of clubs (make sure you only have 14) and don’t forget the grips. They will appreciate it! Grab snacks and water - Make sure you have plenty of water to drink, especially during the summer months. And always have some snacks in your bag to fuel your body and your brain throughout the round. Mark your golf balls - Don’t wait [...]

RecruitPKB: National Letter of Intent

I posted last week that I would have a blog about verbal commitments this week, but I wanted to post the definition of an NLI first so that you have that understanding. Next week though will be a comparison of the two and what they each mean in the recruiting process.

RecruitPKB: What is a Verbal Commitment?

Stay tuned for a full blog about verbal commitments next week.....

RecruitPKB: Research 75+ Realistic Schools

žAfter you have created your college golf resume, it's time to find out what schools you realistically match with. Use the Women’s College Breakdown to identify schools that fit you athletically. žOnce you have determined where you fit in athletically use www.golfstat.com to find golf programs that fit your athletic abilities and resume. žAt www.golfstat.com you will find all of the D1, D2, D3 and NAIA programs ranked within their division. You can then use the Ping College Golf Guide, www.collegegolf.com to research the golf programs and contact the coaches. Also, check out the school’s athletic website and team’s page. Finding a realistic golf program is half of the process. You must then research the schools to find out which ones fit you academically, geographically, socially and financially. žCheck out www.collegeboard.com and www.princetonreview.com. RecruitPKB: Questions to Ask Yourself

As many players begin to make their final college decision I wanted to address some questions that are very important to ask yourself to ensure you find the right fit. It's really easy to get wrapped up in the glitz and glamor that you are shown on your campus visit. College recruiting is a business so the school and coach are going to pitch themselves to you just as a sales person would pitch their product or services. It's a decision that will affect the rest of your life, so make sure you look past the "sales pitch" and decide if it's the right place for you to spend the next 4 years of your life. Are you compatible with the coach and other team members? How does the coach interact with the players? How much will you be expected to practice/play each week? How does the coach handle qualifying? Does the coach work with players on their golf swings? Are they allowed to [...]

RecruitPKB: 12 Habits of a Successful Jr Golfer

There are a lot of qualities and characteristics that a junior golfer needs to possess beyond their golf scores in order to be successful both on and off the golf course. These are 12 that I consider to be the most important ones: You are coachable - You are willing to listen, try, and change how you do things in order to get better You set goals - You have goals and dreams that make you excited to get up and work hard every day You learn from others - You understand that there is a lot to learn from others who have more experience than you do You use your resources - You utilize all of the tools, people, and education that is available to you in order to get better and make good decisions You plan and prepare - You don’t show up and go through the motions, you show up prepared and with a plan of action You don’t complain - [...]
