RecruitPKB: DI or Bust Mentality

Don’t Get Caught Up in the “DI or Bust” Mentality If you ask most junior golfers about their college golf goals, many will say, “I want to play Division I golf.” I hear it all the time — and just last night during a webinar, someone asked, “What’s better: low D1 or top D2?” There’s no doubt playing DI golf can be an incredible experience. It’s a big goal that can drive motivation and focus throughout your junior golf journey. But at some point, you have to recognize that DI golf isn’t the right — or even realistic — option for everyone. There simply aren’t enough spots. And with new roster limits being implemented, those opportunities are shrinking even more. It’s also important to understand that not all DI programs are created equal. Playing at a mid- or high-level D1 school can be overwhelming. The time commitments, [...]

RecruitPKB: Why Won’t The Coach Reply?

First, we are going to assume the NCAA rules allow the coach to respond (current 2026 and 2027 recruits). Once that is established, there are several reasons why you may not get responses, with the most common usually being that you aren’t being realistic with the strength of the golf program. But here are a few reasons why the coach may not be responding to your attempts to contact them: 1. The golf program isn’t realistic for your resume 2. Your academics aren’t strong enough for the school 3. It was a poorly written intro email 4. Your resume doesn’t have all the necessary info 5. They are done with your recruiting class 6. They are busy and just not focused on recruiting 7. They simply aren’t interested or are not seeking out new prospects I know it can be really frustrating not to get responses [...]

RecruitPKB: Practice Rounds vs Tourney Rounds

I wrote an article about this topic a few years ago, but it’s one that continues to come up — and for good reason. You’ve probably heard it (or said it yourself): “She shot 72 in her practice round… why can’t she do that in tournaments?” As a long-time competitive player and coach, I want to respond with, “It’s just not the same thing.”But I know that answer alone doesn’t help anyone understand why it’s different — so let’s take a closer look at what truly separates practice rounds (and on-course practice) from tournament play. The Consequences Are Real Even when a player takes her practice rounds seriously — counts every stroke, plays with focus, and stays disciplined — there’s still one key element missing: real consequences. In practice, no one’s asking you to sign a scorecard. There’s no live leaderboard. You don’t have coaches, friends, [...]

RecruitPKB: Playing One Day Tournaments

I shared some insight on my Instagram this week about playing one-day tournaments and their importance in the process and your game development. You can watch that video clip below. Yes, 2- and 3-day events are more ideal from a recruiting perspective, especially as you advance in the process and become more competitive. However, do not disregard one-day tournaments, especially when you still need to focus more on game improvement over being in the midst of the recruiting process. Don’t let the wrong criteria get in the way of what is important and how you can get better. Putting your game under competition settings more often will only help you get better at competition golf faster. Practicing and playing on your home course or familiar courses, without any purpose or competition, over and over again, will only help you get better at recreational golf. Watch Here   [...]

RecruitPKB: Biggest Piece of Advice from a College Coach

Over the next few weeks, I am going to share some coach responses from a recent survey I did to ask coaches their opinions. Please remember that coaches look for different things and have varying opinions, but I tried to compile some of the most common and relevant responses. Question: What is your biggest piece of advice for young ladies going through this process? Be open-minded I would suggest that they not play tournaments strictly with a focus on college placement. It starts to feel like work and generally leads to worse results. Just play the game with passion and let the chips fall where they fall. Stay open. Communicate. Network with players at schools where you want to attend. Enjoy the process and don't forget to be a kid and enjoy your time in HS. Too many show signs of too much stress and not enough [...]

RecruitPKB: Red Flags in the Process

Over the next few weeks, I am going to share some coach responses from a recent survey I did to ask coaches their opinions. Please remember that coaches look for different things and have varying opinions, but I tried to compile some of the most common and relevant responses. Question: What is the biggest red flag you see among the girls and/or the parents? Too much focus on big name schools and parents too involved Big turnoff to me if I sense that a profile is created and managed by a parent (parent email addresses, etc.). It's important to see that the athlete is ready to step out as a young adult without parents hovering. Parents taking over the process. They won't be playing for us. Too much parental involvement. And not enough excitement. Don't be afraid to tell a coach you love their school if you [...]

RecruitPKB: Tips for Making Your Decision

As the decision-making time continues for many rising seniors and even some rising juniors, here are a few tips on things to consider as that time comes for you. Keep in mind, these are just a few general suggestions. The decision-making part of this process is a very specific and personal process for each individual recruit. Many factors have different levels of importance that play a role in what decision is best for you. Every recruit does need to ask plenty of questions, consider their priorities, see this as a long-term commitment, and take their time to make a decision. RecruitPKB: Starting the Process – Do the Research

It’s never too early to research schools and golf programs. This will give you an idea of what it takes to play for those programs so you can set goals and get to work! You can check out the team and school websites for both academic and athletic information. And of course, their social media! Scoreboard by Clippd  is a great resource for rankings and results. And when looking at the current players’ scores, remember a few things... courses are longer, tougher, and played in fall and spring only, and it’s a higher level of pressure and demand that college players are under, so scores aren’t exactly reflective of junior golf scores. Also, don’t compare yourself to the 5th player on the team to see what is realistic; coaches are trying to make the team better, which means they need to replace their 2nd and 3rd position [...]

RecruitPKB: Starting the Process – Maintain Communication

It’s one step to send out some initial emails, but it takes ongoing communication to generate interest and develop a relationship with the coach. Based on NCAA rules, DI coaches can't respond to your emails or speak to you until June 15th prior to your junior year. So it will mostly just be update emails that you will be sending up to that point to try and generate their interest. If it's after June 15th, then hopefully you are currently in communication with some college coaches and receiving feedback on their part. Whichever scenario, it is necessary to maintain some form of communication and updates as you move throughout this process. If you are being too unrealistic with your options, then you may not be very productive in your efforts, so do keep that in mind. Coaches like ongoing updates about your progress on the golf course, [...]

RecruitPKB: Starting the Process – Contact Coaches

While I am an advocate for having big goals to work hard to achieve and keeping some dream schools on your list, you have to be cautious about what percentage of dream schools vs realistic schools you have on your list, especially these days with the transfer portal and roster caps added extra elements of difficulty for high school recruits when it comes to available spots. I say to contact 50+ schools, but as with most parts of this process, that is dependent on many factors. The reason I use that number is for the average player who is doing this process on their own, without knowledgeable or reliable guidance, I have seen a trend of what happens if they create a list of less than that. When I am providing general advice and tips on the steps of the process, I am trying to consider what [...]
