RecruitPKB: Why Won’t The Coach Reply?
First, we are going to assume the NCAA rules allow the coach to respond (current 2026 and 2027 recruits). Once that is established, there are several reasons why you may not get responses, with the most common usually being that you aren’t being realistic with the strength of the golf program. But here are a few reasons why the coach may not be responding to your attempts to contact them: 1. The golf program isn’t realistic for your resume 2. Your academics aren’t strong enough for the school 3. It was a poorly written intro email 4. Your resume doesn’t have all the necessary info 5. They are done with your recruiting class 6. They are busy and just not focused on recruiting 7. They simply aren’t interested or are not seeking out new prospects I know it can be really frustrating not to get responses from coaches—especially when you feel like you’re being realistic about your goals and doing all the right [...]
RecruitPKB: Practice Rounds vs Tourney Rounds
I wrote an article about this topic a few years ago, but it’s one that continues to come up — and for good reason. You’ve probably heard it (or said it yourself): “She shot 72 in her practice round… why can’t she do that in tournaments?” As a long-time competitive player and coach, I want to respond with, “It’s just not the same thing.”But I know that answer alone doesn’t help anyone understand why it’s different — so let’s take a closer look at what truly separates practice rounds (and on-course practice) from tournament play. The Consequences Are Real Even when a player takes her practice rounds seriously — counts every stroke, plays with focus, and stays disciplined — there’s still one key element missing: real consequences. In practice, no one’s asking you to sign a scorecard. There’s no live leaderboard. You don’t have coaches, friends, or family following along online. You might want to play well, but that’s a very different mindset [...]
RecruitPKB: Things to Consider When You See a College Golf Commitment Post
Things to Consider When You See a College Golf Commitment Post One of the hardest parts of the college golf recruiting journey is scrolling through social media and seeing another player announce their commitment. It’s easy to let comparison creep in or feel like you’re falling behind. However, the reality is that each player’s journey is unique, and what you see online rarely reflects the full picture. Here are a few important things to keep in mind when you come across those posts: 1. Timing matters, and not all commitments are created equal. The timing of a commitment—for example, commitments that happen in the fall of junior year versus the fall of senior year— can be significantly influenced by many factors, making the two situations not directly comparable . What a college coach desires and hopes to get in recruits early in the process will change as the process moves along when he/she doesn't get that level of recruits. Because of this, the [...]
RecruitPKB: Video: Why Playing High School Golf Still Matters in the College Recruiting Process
Does Playing High School Golf Matter in the College Recruiting Process? Last week, I shared an article about this topic, so I wanted to share some insight through a video for those who prefer to watch instead of read, so you can check it out HERE
RecruitPKB: Why Playing High School Golf Still Matters in the College Recruiting Process
Does Playing High School Golf Matter in the College Recruiting Process? It’s a question often asked: Does playing high school golf matter in the college recruiting process? There can be valid arguments against playing, as I have heard stories of poor coaching, strict policies, and limited access to non-high school tournaments or private lessons that have hindered girls from pursuing important opportunities for their future college goals. But for the sake of this article, I want to focus on the bigger-picture value of high school golf—even though, at the end of the day, the scores themselves don’t carry much weight in recruiting. Scores Don’t Tell the Full StoryCollege coaches know that high school golf is played on shorter courses, not always run with the precision of a top-tier junior event, rules aren't always enforced, and course conditions can vary. Because of that, they don’t evaluate a player’s ability based on high school scores. What they do value, however, are the intangible lessons and experiences [...]
RecruitPKB: Playing One Day Tournaments
I shared some insight on my Instagram this week about playing one-day tournaments and their importance in the process and your game development. You can watch that video clip below. Yes, 2- and 3-day events are more ideal from a recruiting perspective, especially as you advance in the process and become more competitive. However, do not disregard one-day tournaments, especially when you still need to focus more on game improvement over being in the midst of the recruiting process. Don’t let the wrong criteria get in the way of what is important and how you can get better. Putting your game under competition settings more often will only help you get better at competition golf faster. Practicing and playing on your home course or familiar courses, without any purpose or competition, over and over again, will only help you get better at recreational golf. RecruitPKB: Biggest Piece of Advice from a College Coach
Over the next few weeks, I am going to share some coach responses from a recent survey I did to ask coaches their opinions. Please remember that coaches look for different things and have varying opinions, but I tried to compile some of the most common and relevant responses. Question: What is your biggest piece of advice for young ladies going through this process? Be open-minded I would suggest that they not play tournaments strictly with a focus on college placement. It starts to feel like work and generally leads to worse results. Just play the game with passion and let the chips fall where they fall. Stay open. Communicate. Network with players at schools where you want to attend. Enjoy the process and don't forget to be a kid and enjoy your time in HS. Too many show signs of too much stress and not enough enjoyment of the process and life in general. Also, show me that you actually love golf. And [...]
RecruitPKB: Red Flags in the Process
Over the next few weeks, I am going to share some coach responses from a recent survey I did to ask coaches their opinions. Please remember that coaches look for different things and have varying opinions, but I tried to compile some of the most common and relevant responses. Question: What is the biggest red flag you see among the girls and/or the parents? Too much focus on big name schools and parents too involved Big turnoff to me if I sense that a profile is created and managed by a parent (parent email addresses, etc.). It's important to see that the athlete is ready to step out as a young adult without parents hovering. Parents taking over the process. They won't be playing for us. Too much parental involvement. And not enough excitement. Don't be afraid to tell a coach you love their school if you love it. And we can tell if you are not being authentic. Signs of lack of toughness [...]
RecruitPKB: Tips for Making Your Decision
As the decision-making time continues for many rising seniors and even some rising juniors, here are a few tips on things to consider as that time comes for you. Keep in mind, these are just a few general suggestions. The decision-making part of this process is a very specific and personal process for each individual recruit. Many factors have different levels of importance that play a role in what decision is best for you. Every recruit does need to ask plenty of questions, consider their priorities, see this as a long-term commitment, and take their time to make a decision. RecruitPKB: Starting the Process – Do the Research
It’s never too early to research schools and golf programs. This will give you an idea of what it takes to play for those programs so you can set goals and get to work! You can check out the team and school websites for both academic and athletic information. And of course, their social media! Golfweek, Golfstat, and Scoreboard by Clippd are great resources for rankings, results, and articles. And when looking at the current players’ scores remember a few things... courses are longer, tougher, and played in fall and spring only and it’s a higher level of pressure and demand that college players are under so scores aren’t exactly reflective of junior golf scores. Also, don’t compare yourself to the 5th player on the team to see what is realistic, coaches are trying to make the team better, which means they need to replace their 2nd and 3rd position players. They will aim as high as possible for as long as possible to [...]
